NAFDAC Debunks Viral Claim On Banned Malaria Drugs, Warns Public Against Misinformation

Nigeria’s drug regulatory agency, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, has dismissed a viral social media claim alleging that several commonly used antimalarial medications have been banned, describing the information as false and misleading.

The claim, which has been widely circulated alongside an image of different paediatric antimalarial suspensions, urged Nigerians to “inform your families” about an alleged ban. The agency, however, clarified that no such blanket prohibition exists on the listed products and warned that the spread of unverified information could cause unnecessary panic and disrupt access to essential medicines.

NAFDAC emphasised that all pharmaceutical products in Nigeria are subject to strict regulatory processes, including registration, quality assurance, and post-market surveillance. It added that any product found to be unsafe or substandard is officially announced and withdrawn through proper channels, not via informal social media posts.

Brandspur Health Desk reports that the agency urged the public to rely only on verified updates from its official platforms and other credible health authorities. It also encouraged consumers to check drug registration numbers and report suspicious or unregistered products to the appropriate authorities.

The agency further reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health, noting that misinformation around critical treatments such as antimalarial drugs could have serious consequences, particularly for vulnerable groups like children.
