Microsoft has unveiled plans to invest $10 billion in Japan between 2026 and 2029, marking one of its largest international commitments aimed at accelerating artificial intelligence adoption, strengthening cybersecurity, and building digital talent.

The multi-year investment will focus on expanding in-country AI and cloud infrastructure, enhancing partnerships with local technology providers, and supporting large-scale workforce training initiatives. The company also plans to collaborate with domestic firms including SoftBank and Sakura Internet to develop advanced computing systems that ensure data remains within Japan.

Brandspur Brand News reports that the initiative aligns with Japan’s national strategy to boost economic growth and technological resilience, with government officials welcoming the investment as a significant step toward strengthening data sovereignty and innovation capacity. The programme will also include closer cooperation with national cybersecurity agencies to improve threat detection and response capabilities.

A key component of the plan involves training one million engineers, developers, and workers across critical industries by 2030, addressing a projected shortage of skilled professionals in AI and robotics. The company will partner with major Japanese firms such as Fujitsu, Hitachi, and NTT Data to deliver both technical and practical training programmes.

In addition to workforce development, Microsoft is expanding its research and innovation efforts in Japan, including funding initiatives to support scientific studies powered by AI and strengthening collaborations with academic institutions.

The investment builds on Microsoft’s earlier $2.9 billion commitment announced in 2024 and reflects growing demand for AI solutions across Japan’s economy, as businesses and public institutions increasingly integrate advanced technologies into operations and services.
