Busha, Women In DeFi Launch Partnership To Boost Women’s Participation In Africa’s Tech Industry

Busha has partnered with Women in DeFi (WiD) to launch “Building Tomorrow Together,” a new initiative aimed at increasing women’s participation in technology, Web3 and digital finance across Africa through skills development, financial education and career support programmes.

The partnership was unveiled at the Women in DeFi Summit 2026 in Lagos, where five young women received laptop scholarships to support their studies, professional development and entrepreneurial ambitions. The scholarship programme marks the first phase of a broader collaboration focused on expanding access to opportunities in the digital economy.

According to Brandspur Brand News, the initiative comes as Africa continues to produce a significant number of female graduates in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), yet women remain underrepresented in technology-related careers across the continent.

Data referenced by the partners from McKinsey’s 2025 report on gender parity in African technology indicates that while women account for about 47 per cent of STEM graduates in Africa, they occupy only between 23 and 30 per cent of technology jobs. The partnership seeks to narrow this gap by providing women with practical skills, mentorship and access to emerging opportunities in blockchain, decentralised finance and other technology-driven sectors.

In addition to the laptop scholarship scheme, the collaboration will introduce several programmes designed to improve digital inclusion. These include the WiD Goes to School outreach initiative, which will expose young women to careers in technology and innovation, a six-month savings challenge powered by Busha’s savings platform to encourage stronger financial habits, and an introductory Web3 education programme covering blockchain technology, decentralised finance and digital assets.

Busha said the partnership aligns with its broader commitment to building a more inclusive technology and financial services ecosystem. The company noted that women make up approximately 47 per cent of its workforce, while more than 30 per cent of management positions are occupied by women, reflecting its focus on diversity in leadership and innovation.

Representatives of both organisations said the collaboration is designed to remove barriers preventing women from accessing careers in technology by providing practical tools, industry knowledge and professional networks that can support long-term success in the digital economy.

The partners believe initiatives that improve women’s access to technology education and emerging digital opportunities will play an important role in strengthening Africa’s innovation ecosystem as industries increasingly adopt blockchain, financial technology and other advanced digital solutions.
