
The global insights and analytics industry risks losing its capacity for innovation if organisations continue to favour conformity over diverse thinking, according to a new analysis published by ESOMAR’s Research World. The report argues that increasing standardisation, combined with the growing influence of artificial intelligence, is making research outputs less original and reducing the industry’s ability to generate breakthrough ideas.
The analysis suggests that many research findings are becoming increasingly similar because organisations often recruit, promote and reward people with comparable educational backgrounds, professional experiences and ways of thinking. This tendency, it says, limits exposure to alternative perspectives that are essential for solving complex business challenges.
Drawing on concepts from anthropology, sociology and behavioural science, the publication argues that organisations naturally gravitate towards familiar viewpoints during periods of uncertainty, Brandspur Brand News reports. While this may create consistency, it can also suppress creativity and discourage unconventional approaches that often lead to meaningful innovation.
The report highlights research indicating that teams made up of individuals with diverse experiences and problem-solving methods frequently outperform groups composed solely of recognised experts. According to the analysis, diversity reduces the likelihood of collective blind spots because participants approach challenges from different angles rather than relying on identical assumptions.
It also warns that tighter procurement processes, compressed project timelines and increased reliance on standardised methodologies are making it more difficult for researchers to explore unexpected insights or pursue unconventional lines of enquiry. As a result, research projects are increasingly optimised for speed and presentation rather than discovery.
The growing use of artificial intelligence presents another challenge, the report notes. While AI can improve efficiency and process large volumes of information, excessive dependence on automated systems could reinforce existing biases by favouring patterns that already exist instead of identifying novel perspectives.
ESOMAR concludes that the long-term value of the insights industry will depend on its ability to preserve intellectual diversity, encourage critical thinking and create environments where differing viewpoints are viewed as strengths rather than obstacles. It argues that organisations seeking sustained innovation must balance technological advancement with human creativity to produce more meaningful and impactful business insights.
