The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has said Nigeria’s long-awaited Digital Switch Over (DSO) programme is expected to unlock an estimated N605.2 billion advertising market by improving audience measurement and creating a more transparent media ecosystem for broadcasters, advertisers and investors.
According to the commission, the transition from analogue to digital terrestrial broadcasting will provide more accurate audience data, enabling advertisers to make better-informed decisions on media spending while helping broadcasters demonstrate the value of their content to brands. The development is also expected to strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s advertising industry and support wider growth across the creative and media sectors.
The initiative forms part of Nigeria’s broader digital broadcasting agenda aimed at modernising television transmission, improving picture and sound quality, expanding channel capacity and creating new commercial opportunities across the value chain, Brandspur Brand News reports.
Industry stakeholders have long identified reliable audience measurement as one of the major challenges limiting advertising efficiency in Nigeria. NBC believes the digital broadcasting framework will introduce more robust data collection systems capable of delivering credible audience insights for advertisers, agencies and media owners.
The commission said enhanced measurement tools will allow businesses to target consumers more effectively while ensuring advertising budgets are allocated based on verified viewing patterns rather than estimates. This is expected to improve accountability across the broadcast advertising market.
Beyond advertising, the Digital Switch Over project is designed to expand access to digital television services, encourage local content production and stimulate investment in broadcasting infrastructure. The transition is also expected to generate employment opportunities across content creation, signal distribution, equipment manufacturing and technical services.
Nigeria began pursuing digital migration in line with global broadcasting standards, although implementation has experienced multiple delays over the years. The renewed push comes as authorities seek to accelerate the country’s digital transformation agenda and unlock the economic benefits associated with modern broadcasting technology.
NBC maintains that completing the Digital Switch Over project will strengthen the competitiveness of Nigeria’s broadcasting industry while positioning the sector to support sustained growth in advertising revenue, innovation and the wider digital economy.
