Wema Bank and Access Bank emerged among the biggest winners at the 2026 Euromoney Awards for Excellence, securing major honours that underscore the growing influence of Nigerian financial institutions in digital banking, customer experience, sustainability and investment banking across Africa.
Wema Bank claimed the title of Nigeria’s Best Digital Bank for Consumers, while Access Bank collected 16 awards spanning several African markets in recognition of its performance across digital innovation, corporate responsibility, SME banking, customer experience and sustainable finance.
The recognition further highlights the increasing competitiveness of Nigeria’s banking sector on the global stage, with Brandspur Banking News Desk reporting that multiple Nigerian institutions were acknowledged for delivering innovation, strong governance, customer-focused services and long-term business growth.
Wema Bank received its latest accolade for expanding its digital banking capabilities through ALAT, widely recognised as Africa’s first fully digital banking platform. The lender has continued to strengthen its digital offerings with services such as faster account opening, artificial intelligence-driven fraud detection, contactless payment solutions, voice-enabled banking and broader financial inclusion through its agency banking network.
The bank said its continued investment in technology reflects a long-term strategy focused on making banking more accessible, secure and convenient for individuals and businesses while accelerating digital financial services across Nigeria.
Access Bank also recorded one of its strongest performances at the awards, winning honours in multiple countries and categories. Its achievements covered corporate responsibility in Angola, Botswana and Nigeria, digital banking leadership in Cameroon, customer experience excellence in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya, SME banking leadership in Ghana, Nigeria and Zambia, as well as sustainable finance and ESG leadership in Rwanda and Zambia.
The lender was additionally recognised as the Best Bank in The Gambia, Sierra Leone and Zambia, reflecting its expanding footprint and operational strength across African markets.
According to the bank, the awards recognise sustained investment in innovation, responsible banking practices, customer-focused products and long-term value creation across its regional and international operations.
Other Nigerian institutions also featured prominently during the awards ceremony. Guaranty Trust Bank secured recognition as Nigeria’s Best Digital Bank in a separate category from Wema Bank’s consumer-focused digital banking award.
Nigeria’s investment banking industry equally recorded strong performances. Iron Capital was named the country’s Best Investment Bank for Financing Solutions, while CardinalStone Partners won awards for Best Investment Bank for Mergers and Acquisitions and Best for Capital Markets Advisory after playing key roles in several high-profile transactions.
Chapel Hill Denham extended its impressive record by winning Nigeria’s Best Investment Bank for the fifth consecutive year, alongside awards for Equity Capital Markets and Africa’s Best Investment Bank for Financial Institutions. CardinalStone also retained its position as the leading securities firm on the Nigerian Exchange for the fourth consecutive year.
The Euromoney Awards for Excellence remain one of the banking industry’s most respected international recognition programmes, assessing financial institutions on innovation, financial performance, leadership, governance, strategic execution, customer outcomes and sustainable long-term value creation.
