Globacom emerged as Nigeria’s fastest-growing internet provider in May after adding about 1.2 million new subscribers, the highest increase recorded by any of the country’s major telecom operators during the month.
New figures released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) show Nigeria’s internet subscriber base climbed from 154.3 million in April to about 157 million in May, an increase of roughly 2.67 million users. Glo accounted for nearly half of that growth, raising its internet subscriber base from 15.5 million to 16.8 million.
Airtel also posted a strong performance, attracting about 1.07 million new internet subscribers to reach 55.8 million. MTN recorded a more modest increase of 382,894 subscribers, taking its total to around 83.5 million. Brandspur Banking News Desk learnt that the latest figures underline the continued demand for mobile internet services across the country, despite higher telecom costs and broader economic pressures.
For many Nigerians, mobile data has become more than a communication tool. It powers banking transactions, online classes, business operations, entertainment and everyday communication, making subscriber growth a key measure of how the country’s digital economy is evolving.
T2 Mobile, formerly known as 9mobile, was the only major operator that did not record any growth during the month. Its internet subscriber base remained unchanged at 802,534 for the second consecutive month.
The latest NCC data points to an increasingly competitive market, with operators continuing to battle for new data users as internet access becomes even more central to daily life, business and economic activity across Nigeria.
