
A mosquito that can survive many of the insecticides used to fight malaria is spreading across Africa, prompting fresh warnings from scientists who fear it could undo years of progress in reducing one of the continent’s deadliest diseases.
The invasive species, Anopheles stephensi, is changing the way health experts think about malaria transmission. Unlike the mosquitoes traditionally linked to the disease in Africa, this species is comfortable living in busy towns and cities. It breeds in everyday water containers such as buckets, tanks and drums, bringing the risk of malaria much closer to where millions of people live.
That shift has alarmed researchers. For decades, malaria control efforts have focused heavily on rural communities, where mosquito breeding sites are more common. But the spread of Anopheles stephensi suggests densely populated urban centres could become the next frontline in the battle against the disease.
