The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday nationwide to commemorate Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
The declaration was announced on Friday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani. The announcement has confirmed Tuesday as a work-free day for Nigerians covered by the federal public holiday.
Brandspur News Desk reports that the government’s message for this year’s celebration goes beyond the holiday itself, with Nigerians urged to reflect on values associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad, particularly compassion, humility and service to others.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora, while encouraging citizens to use the occasion to pray for peace and stronger national cohesion. He stressed that maintaining unity remained a shared responsibility, regardless of religious or other differences.
The minister also appealed to Nigerians to observe the celebration peacefully and with restraint and mutual respect. His message comes as families, communities and Muslim faithful prepare for religious activities marking Eid ul Mawlid on Tuesday.
The Federal Government further reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and sustaining peace across the country, while wishing Muslims a peaceful and joyous Eid ul Mawlid celebration.
The August 25 holiday means public offices covered by the federal declaration will observe a break from normal work on Tuesday, allowing Muslim faithful and other Nigerians to participate in activities associated with the occasion.
