As marketing professionals, it is very easy to overburden ourselves when trying to achieve a particular result. You may want to improve your brand message, change an outdated logo or even review your tagline.
All of these are good, but it becomes a problem when you make inevitable mistakes while at it. In branding, you would notice that companies want to be at the top of their game. Some may decide to retain customers, while others may just desire to get clients and make money instantly.
Which side of the spectrum are you on? Don’t worry. Whichever one you choose does not really matter if you are doing the right thing, but one mistake can cost your brand everything.
So, if you are ready to set yourself apart in the market, fasten your belts as we quickly discuss some branding mistakes to avoid.

Do you make these mistakes?
Whether you are a personal or corporate brand, two things are involved. You either struggle or aspire to build a more substantial presence in the competitive market.
Every slight chance is exploited to connect with the audience to drive growth and engagement, but such is not always the case.
Sometimes, you discover that your efforts in attracting and retaining customers are not converting. Then you blame it on your marketing strategy — instead of looking into the mirror.
Then, we thought. Why can’t we save professionals from mistakes that lead to stress and, eventually, a fall in sales? So, we came up with 4 mistakes to avoid while branding your business in the competitive market of today.
So, walk with us as we take you on a journey of a return, which is — knowing and identifying mistakes to avoid in branding.
Not Creating strict Brand guidelines and Enforcing them.
Do you have a consistent brand logo, colour and tagline? Be brutally honest with yourself because these things constitute your image.
Apart from providing a service, customers need to identify with something that allows them to remember you.
If you are guilty of this, create your brand guidelines and assets– logo, colours and typography. Your logo should go hand in hand with colour and typography; otherwise, customers would have no reason to purchase anything. Why?
Simply because you lack consistency in creating and sticking to a brand guideline. Moreover, if you have a proper brand guideline, don’t get too comfortable; the second tip is probably for you.
Not Maintaining a Brand Voice and Personality.
How do you feel as a personal or corporate brand when other brands look and feel appealing to you? They have consistently maintained a voice and built a personality that grabs the attention of customers.
How do you avoid this mistake? Analyse your brand voice– how the brand will look and feel. Then, make sure it communicates your message simply, clearly and succinctly. And voila, you are building a successful brand.

That tip you just read keeps the same brand voice and personality across all digital platforms because jumping on trends that are irrelevant to your voice can be unhealthy for your brand.
Not Embracing Change
Let’s be frank, successful brands know when, how and what to change based on culture and society. While others wait until their brands are completely irrelevant before they decide to make a change — how gross.
It doesn’t mean your brand message will change, certainly not. What changes is the pattern in which your brand message sticks with your audience. Look at Coca-Cola. In the olden days, they were known for evoking happiness, and that happiness was about family time.
Today, happiness is different because it’s now about inclusiveness and acceptance of others. That is precisely how your brand should be — adapt to culture change.
You don’t wait until sales fall before you strategise because successful brands adjust their message over time without losing what they stand for.
So, go out there and interact with your customers. Look at their pattern in behaviour to ensure your brand is still alive and clearly understand what topics are important to them.
Not having a Strong Tagline.
Now, pick up a pen and a paper and write down 3 things peculiar to your brand. If you struggled with this, it’s high time you revisited what your company stands for.
Your brand value gives birth to your tagline, and it leads to an emotional effect on customers. It should be simple, direct, memorable and unique.
To be sincere, audiences find it boring when ads or captions are written in technical grammar, especially when it’s too many words– so don’t do it.
The most effective taglines speak about a brand in three to six words — so avoid doing too much. Like Apple, Nike, Google and other brands, your choice of words should be believable and ensure it accurately captures who you are as a company.
So, dig deep into your creative mind and create something good and unique.
