Chocolate City Rejects UMG Affiliation Claims, Says Label Remains Nigerian Owned

Chocolate City Music has rejected claims linking the Nigerian record label to Universal Music Group, UMG, insisting that it has never had a contractual relationship or affiliation with the global music company.

The label also dismissed allegations that it is funded, controlled or directed by a foreign intelligence agency or state actor, describing such claims as false and irresponsible.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Brandspur Brand News reports that Chocolate City said it has operated independently for more than 20 years, relying on its talent, business efforts and legitimate commercial partnerships.

The record company said the reports contained a fundamental error regarding its alleged connection with UMG, stressing that there has been no contractual arrangement between both organisations.

Chocolate City further maintained that its ownership remains entirely Nigerian and that it continues to operate independently within the African creative industry.

The label said its focus is on building lasting value for African creatives and supporting the development of the continent’s wider creative economy.

The statement came in response to claims circulating online about the company’s ownership, funding and alleged links to foreign interests.

Chocolate City did not provide details about the origin of the claims in its statement but directly addressed the allegations by reaffirming its ownership structure and independence.

The company has operated for more than two decades, during which it has built its business through what it described as talent, hard work and legitimate commercial partnerships.

Its latest clarification places its position on the alleged Universal Music Group relationship firmly on record, as the label continues to identify itself as a wholly Nigerian owned and independent music company.
