Bold ’98 Irish Whiskey Enters Nigerian Market With Retro Launch Experience

Irish whiskey brand Bold ’98 has entered the Nigerian market, introducing its premium blended whiskey through a retro themed launch designed to combine product tasting, entertainment and consumer engagement.

The brand marked its arrival with the “Party Like It’s ’98” event at Nomaada Restaurant in Victoria Island, Lagos, bringing together distributors, media personalities, celebrities and other guests as it began its push into Nigeria’s competitive premium spirits market.

Brandspur Brand News understands that the launch was deliberately structured around consumer experience rather than a conventional product presentation. Guests sampled the whiskey through cocktails and food pairings, while the venue featured a Cocktail Lab, chef’s table and tasting stations.

The event also incorporated Polaroid photography built around 1980s and 1990s nostalgia, alongside a catwalk, staged bottle reveal, fireside discussion, headline performance and a rap and dance contest between Gen Z participants and Millennials.

Motunrayo Raheem, Executive Director, Commercial Operations at Stanford Irish Spirits Co, said the approach was intended to allow consumers and members of the trade to experience the product directly rather than rely solely on formal brand messaging.

Bold ’98 is positioning itself around a heritage linked to the 1798 Irish rebellion. According to the brand’s makers, Stafford Irish Spirits Co of Enniscorthy, barley carried by rebels was said to have sprouted on the battlefield after the uprising, becoming part of the brand’s story of resilience and hope.

That history informs the campaign line, “Rooted in Rebellion”, which the company is using to establish a distinct identity as it enters the Nigerian market.

The brand describes Bold ’98 as a premium blended Irish whiskey from County Wexford, with a creamy and smooth character and notes of caramel and toasted oak. It is intended to be consumed neat or on the rocks, while also being suited to cocktails.

The Nigerian launch comes as international spirits brands compete for consumers in the country’s premium whisky segment. For a new entrant, differentiation extends beyond the liquid itself, with heritage, branding and experiences increasingly forming part of how products are presented to consumers.

Raheem said the company sees Nigeria as more than a temporary market for the whiskey, describing the launch as the start of a sustained presence in the country.

The 1798 rebellion, which forms the historical foundation of the brand narrative, involved the Society of the United Irishmen and sought to unite Catholics, Protestants and Dissenters in opposition to British rule. Fighting spread across parts of Ireland, including Wexford, Antrim and Down, while French forces landed in County Mayo before the rebellion was eventually suppressed.

At the Lagos launch, the historical narrative was paired with a distinctly contemporary marketing strategy, using social media friendly experiences and entertainment to introduce the product to a new audience.

The event encouraged attendees to share their experiences online using hashtags including #PartyLikeIts98, #PLIS98 and #Bold98, extending the launch beyond the physical venue and into digital conversations around the brand.
