Unilever Nigeria has awarded scholarships to children of its employees under an education programme that has supported academically strong students for more than three decades.

The Unilever Nigeria Scholarship Scheme provides merit based financial support to children of the company’s non management employees, covering their secondary school education from Junior Secondary School through Senior Secondary School Year Three, subject to continued academic performance.

Brandspur Brand News reports that the latest beneficiaries were selected through a competitive aptitude examination administered by the West African Examinations Council across Unilever Nigeria’s manufacturing locations in Agbara and Oregun.

The scheme is structured around academic performance. New applicants must rank among the top 25 candidates and score at least 50 per cent in the aptitude examination to qualify for the award.

Existing beneficiaries must also meet specified academic requirements to retain their scholarships. They are expected to maintain a minimum 50 per cent average in their final examinations and secure at least five credits, including Mathematics and English Language, in a recognised secondary school final examination on their first attempt.

The programme’s structure means the scholarship is not simply awarded once, but can continue throughout a beneficiary’s secondary education where the student maintains the required academic standards.

Human Relations Director of Unilever Nigeria, Michael Duah, said the initiative forms part of the company’s wider commitment to supporting its employees and their families.

Duah said the scholarship scheme has, for more than 30 years, recognised academic achievement among employees’ children while providing support during an important stage of their education.

He described education as a catalyst for progress and said the company’s continued investment in the programme was aimed at supporting the aspirations and potential of young Nigerians.

By linking continued financial support to academic performance, the Unilever Nigeria Scholarship Scheme has combined employee welfare with a merit based approach to education, giving qualifying children an opportunity to pursue their secondary education with sustained support.
