Global media agency PHD has retained the media planning and buying account of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) following a competitive review that examined agencies’ strategic capabilities, commercial performance, data expertise and readiness for emerging technologies.
The decision secures PHD’s position as ANZ’s media partner after 15 years of working with the financial services group. Under the renewed arrangement, the agency will continue managing media strategy, audience planning, investment and campaign optimisation for the bank in Australia.
The outcome highlights the growing importance of measurable results, data-led planning and artificial intelligence capabilities in agency selection. Brandspur Brand News reports that the review reflects the increasing pressure on media agencies to demonstrate not only their current value but also their ability to adapt as customer behaviour and advertising technology evolve.
ANZ chief marketing officer Sian Chadwick said the bank assessed competing agencies against its future media needs, examining strategic leadership, media effectiveness, commercial terms, measurement, technology and operational standards. PHD emerged as the strongest overall candidate, according to the bank.
For PHD, retaining the account represents a significant endorsement of a relationship built over more than a decade. PHD Australia chief executive Laura Nice said the agency had to demonstrate the value it delivers today as well as identify opportunities capable of supporting ANZ’s future growth.
Nice described the next phase of the partnership as an opportunity to build on the agency’s existing work while pursuing more ambitious business objectives. She also acknowledged the demands of the review, noting that long-standing relationships do not remove the need for agencies to prove their performance.
The account review comes as advertisers place greater emphasis on the connection between media spending and business outcomes. Data quality, campaign measurement, technological maturity and operational efficiency featured among the criteria used by ANZ, signalling that established agency relationships must continue to meet evolving client expectations.
PHD’s responsibilities will cover the planning and management of ANZ’s media activity, including identifying relevant audiences, allocating investment and refining campaigns to improve performance. The review was conducted in Australia, and the announcement does not establish any change to ANZ’s media arrangements in other markets.
The result gives PHD continuity with a major banking client while setting expectations for the next stage of the relationship. For agencies competing for large accounts, it also reinforces the need to combine strategic expertise with credible measurement, technological capability and a clear contribution to clients’ commercial priorities.
