Spotify is set to introduce an ‘AI Persona’ label for artists, giving listeners a clearer way to identify creators whose musical identity involves artificial intelligence.
The new label will allow artists to disclose their use of AI themselves through Spotify for Artists. This means creators who use artificial intelligence as part of their artistic process will have a direct way to inform the platform and, ultimately, their audience.
Spotify will not rely entirely on voluntary disclosures. Where the platform identifies an artist or content that may qualify for the designation, it can also apply the label following checks involving human moderation and AI detection tools.
The development, according to Brandspur Brand News, could give listeners more context when discovering unfamiliar artists on the streaming service. For users, the label may provide an important clue about who, or what, is behind the music they are hearing.
The move also puts greater responsibility on Spotify to distinguish between artists who openly embrace AI and cases where the technology may be used without clear disclosure. Rather than leaving listeners to guess, the proposed system is designed to make the information more visible.
For artists, the self-disclosure option provides a straightforward route to identify themselves as an AI Persona through their Spotify for Artists accounts. It also means creators can be more open about the role artificial intelligence plays in shaping their work.
Spotify’s use of both human moderation and AI detection tools suggests that the platform will have its own process for identifying artists who may need the label, particularly where no voluntary disclosure has been made.
The change comes as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly intertwined with music creation and the way artists present themselves online. For listeners, the practical effect is simple: when the feature is rolled out, an AI Persona label could help them understand more about the creative identity behind an artist before pressing play.
