Triggerfish Partners With Women In Animation On 2021 Women In Animation World Summit

Women in Animation (WIA) is pleased to announce the program for the fifth Women In Animation World Summit, in conjunction with this year’hybrid version of the Annecy International Animation Festival and Mifa 2021.

The  theme of this year’s virtual Summit is “The Business Case for Diversity.”

The Women in Animation World Summit will be viewable exclusively as part of the festival’s virtual programming and for WIA members from Monday, June 14th at 9:00am CAT through Saturday, June 19th. As of June 20th, the Summit will be available to the general public via the WIA website and YouTube Channel.

“At the last four Summits, WIA built shared vocabulary around diversity, inclusion, belonging and equity,” said WIA President, Marge Dean. “As a global community, the organization traversed monumental paradigm shifts, challenges and opportunities this past year, including racial equity, a global pandemic, a rise in discriminatory violence and strong headwind toward inclusivity. As WIA marks its fifth Summit at Annecy, it’s important to ensure that our global WIA community continue to learn from each other and share not only the business imperative for DEI, but also the successes and failures we’ve all had in trying to move forward.”

Commenting on the theme, WIA Secretary/DEI Chair Julie Ann Crommett added, “The business case is not just that diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) are good for business empirically (they are), but that we each as businesses and individuals have a part to play in making change. Many companies, organizations and industries have committed to doing better – seizing the case for DEI. We get further faster by being more transparent with each other, more transparent as an industry and truly building a global community of practice and thought leadership. Our hope is this Summit begins to model what transparency and action can and should be in our industry.”

Further to that, WIA Vice President Jinko Gotoh said, “We must democratize animation on all fronts: education, art, technology, and industry. I’m proud of the work WIA continues to do. We advocate sustainable change across the globe. Along those lines, we are thrilled to partner with Triggerfish to present this year’s Summit, as they have been doing such tremendous work over the years to diversify storytelling and bring better representation to the African animation industry.”

“We’re honored to be partnering with WIA on this important summit,” said Stuart Forrest, CEO, Triggerfish. “Triggerfish has a vision for a world where stories are told and created by the people the stories belong to, and WIA’s work in gender inclusivity and diversity takes huge steps towards that goal, particularly as it applies to the continent of Africa.”

Added Mickaël Marin, CEO of Citia, on behalf of the Annecy International Animation Festival, “We are so proud to once again host the Women in Animation World Summit as part of our festival. WIA’s dedication to presenting enlightening conversations surrounding diversity and inclusion really inspire us year after year.”

Lafarge Africa Posts 30.8% Growth For 2020

Cement manufacturer Lafarge Africa Plc has posted 30.8 per cent growth in recurring earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT).

Prince Adebode Adefioye, Chairman of the company’s board, said on Friday in Lagos that the growth was presented and approved at its 62nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on May 25.

Adefioye said that in spite of COVID-19 pandemic challenges, the company recorded 8.3 per cent increase in net sales driven primarily by strong volume growth.

Adefioye hinged the successes on the resilience of the brand and ability to deploy strategic stakeholder engagements as well as a balanced shared value approach of achieving corporate performance.

He said, in a statement, that the audited financial result for 2020 was an indication of the validity of the company’s execution of the “health, cost and cash” action plan; which has led to impressive results.

“Lafarge Africa is committed to building a more sustainable and inclusive economy that works for all.

“To reinforce our sustainability leadership, we have continued to integrate initiatives and policies to deliver superior stakeholder value through innovation, creativity and continuous improvement in line with global best practices.

“Notwithstanding the pandemic, Lafarge Africa demonstrates resilience and is very proud of how management and employees truly enlivened Lafarge values, keeping the people and business safe while standing resolute by host communities,” he said.

Adefioye added that, at the AGM, shareholders unanimously agreed on the proposed final dividend of 100k per share.

The Chief Executive Officer of Lafarge, Mr Khaled El-Dokani, stated that the audited financial statement gave a true picture of the company’s financial performance during the period under review.

El-Dokani said in spite the harsh realities of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company was able to outperform its previous performance due to deliberate focus by the company’s management and employees.

“The company focuses on being in a ‘sold-out’ situation, where we can sell all that we produce,’’ he said.

A representative of the shareholders, Mr. Sunny Nwosu, commended Lafarge Africa for sustaining profit and dividend payment in spite the harsh and challenging economy experienced in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lafarge Africa is a member of LafargeHolcim, headquartered in Switzerland.

See Why Football Sponsorship Should Be On Your List In 2021

Sports sponsorship is big business, and like any marketing spend, its value and ROI need to be evaluated carefully.

Would you pay £50,000 to have your brand name on Arsenal’s shirts?  Almost certainly.  £50 million? Maybe. £500 million, definitely not.  It’s a commercial decision.

Using rigorous analysis to inform partnership decision-making is an important element in sponsorship evaluation for both rightsholder and sponsor brands. Sponsoring brands will have different objectives (and thus KPIs/measures), but if the commercial value is to be assessed, those measures must relate to financial performance in some way – Facebook Likes or ‘media equivalents’ aren’t enough.

We have developed a methodology to evaluate sponsorship activities that involves determining monetary value ROI for sponsors beyond advertising equivalency.

Brand-Building vs. Short-Term Activation

Sponsorship can pay off via short-term sales uplifts, especially if additional activations (competitions, special packs) are built-in.  But most sponsors seek broader and more enduring benefits for the brand, whether that is through increased awareness, improved brand image, alignment with a quality club/event, or other improvements to brand equity.

But even these measures may not carry sufficient weight in the boardroom and finance department and being able to measure using real monetary value can go a long way in securing marketing budgets. The ultimate goal of sponsorship activity is to generate a financial return for the business.

Hence the relevance of measuring sponsorships’ impact on brand strength (using frameworks such as our Brand Strength Index) and brand value and contribution.  These take better account of the longer-term impact of sponsorship and the financial returns from it.

Sponsorship Affects Various Stakeholders

Most sponsorship analysis focuses on the likely impact on consumers and customers, which is entirely appropriate – ultimately that’s how commercial benefits will generally accrue.  But the impact on other stakeholders may not be negligible.  Will your brand make you more attractive as an employer?

Will financial analysts or business media see you in different light?  In a recent analysis for a global drinks brand, we urged our client to consider the possible uplift in on-premise distribution driven by the sponsorship.  These benefits can and should be quantified, even if somewhat crudely – and may make a difference to tight renew/drop decisions.

Measuring The Uplift

With a focus on consumers or customers, Brand Finance recommends assessing any uplift in brand health using a combination of market research and digital indicators (e.g. search, web visits, social media posts/engagement).  Market research is essential in order to assess whether sponsorship has improved key brand measures such as awareness/familiarity, consideration/preference, overall reputation, and other brand-specific measures (these, in turn, must be shown to relate to commercial performance in some way).

Attribution in surveys is never straightforward, and calculation may be harder depending on what pre-sponsorship measures are available.  It’s not easy (or zero-cost), but reverting to soft measures such as ‘equivalent to £500,000 of paid advertising’ is not sufficient.

Even without pre-sponsorship data, it is possible to estimate uplift.  In our latest Global Football Fan Research, we assessed the possible uplift which various sponsors of major clubs might have achieved.

Unsurprisingly, we can see that Barcelona fans in Spain have much higher consideration for sponsoring brand Rakuten, compared with fans of other clubs.  But causality is difficult to infer from one wave of research, and even the fans of other clubs in Spain will have been exposed to the sponsorship (e.g. when their club plays Barca).

A more revealing analysis is the comparison outside of Spain between football fans who follow La Liga or the Champions League – fans likely to have been exposed to Rakuten’s sponsorship – versus fans who follow other leagues and clubs.  This shows a significant uplift for Rakuten:

Football Sponsorship: Fan Consideration for Rakuten
Football Sponsorship: Fan Consideration for Rakuten
Sponsorship: Fan Closeness to Rakuten
Fan Closeness to Rakuten

What Is It Worth?

Improvement on key metrics, such as brand consideration, have a measurable impact on brand and business value in our valuations because in turn they are empirically proven to be predictive of brand growth and sales uplifts.

Precise estimates of the value Rakuten might have gained from the sponsorship requires management data, but our initial calculations suggest that Rakuten has derived significant value from the sponsorship.  Since Rakuten began their sponsorship in 2017, it has cost around €190m – and on that basis, it appears that the brand has achieved a good commercial return.

Rakuten KPI’s are higher among those who are exposed to the sponsorship

Every brand sponsor should attempt this kind of evaluation.  Only then can decisions regarding sponsorship opportunities and renewal be based hard evidence and realistic appraisal of their commercial contribution.

Understanding your potential return on marketing investment is key. We are here to help and talk you through it. Use the form at the bottom of the page to get in touch.

Brand Finance Sponsorship Valuation Services

When embarking on a new sponsorship, or considering the renewal of an existing sponsorship, whether you are a rights holder or a corporate brand, one must ask themselves ‘Do I have a framework in place to quantify the ROI dollar value to maximise effectiveness, inform decision making and increase negotiation leverage.’

With such high levels of investment in sports sponsorship, a lot of money can be left on the table. As such, there is a requirement to improve the sophistication of sponsorship valuation, to provide a basis of valuation in the language of the CFO, CEO, and Board who are often the key decision-makers.

Flour Mills of Nigeria Expands Its Sugar BIP In Nasarawa State

Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc (Flour Mills), Nigeria’s leading integrated food business and agro-allied Group, and owners of the iconic brand, ‘Golden Penny,’ today announced a further expansion to its sugar backward integration program (BIP) with the acquisition of 20,450 hectares of land in Nasarawa State.

The move is part of FMN’s commitment to the backward integration programme of the Nigeria Sugar Master Plan, and the overall growth strategy of the Sugar industry in the country.

Flour Mills of Nigeria: Revenue from the sales of Sugar increased by 29.47% to ₦58.19bn

The signing ceremony would hold in Abuja on Friday 28th May 2021, to commemorate the official handover of the land by the Governor, His Excellency, Engineer Abdullahi Sule, to FMN. The Group Managing Director /CEO of FMN, Mr. Omoboyede Olusanya, in the company of other Senior Executives of FMN, shall accept the handover of the site on behalf of FMN.

The 20,450 hectares is situated at Umaisha Development Area of Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State on the north bank of the Benue river, about 70 kilometres upstream from Lokoja.

It is expected that land preparation, including, surveys and the initial designs will start immediately in anticipation of the commencement of operations during the course of this year, The plan is to develop up to 15,000 hectares under cane and to construct a state-of-the-art sugar mill in line with our BIP commitments and Nigeria’s drive for self-sufficiency in sugar production.

Similar to our investments at Sunti, Niger State, the development plan of the Nasarawa BIP will significantly benefit neighbouring communities who will be impacted by numerous community improvement projects that have already been earmarked to begin soon, including access roads, electrification projects, primary healthcare and educational facilities and expanded youth job opportunities – including the extension of our out-grower scheme that will empower farmers, and ultimately improve lives.

The total projected cost to achieve this bold new plan is at least USD$300million.

System Liquidity Eases Following May FAAC Inflow, Spurs Improved Demand In FGN Bonds

Activity picked up in the FGN bonds market, with buying interests seen across the benchmark curve. The 2023s paper was the most active at the short-end of the curve, trading at 11.75% while offers on the 2024s and 2025s remained scarce.

Bids improved by c.5bps on the average at the belly of the curve, staying around 13.15% levels for most of the session with little offers to match at those levels. Buying interest for the 2035s paper sustained for another trading session, changing hands at 14.00% as investors shrugged off any shown offers below.

The 2049s continued to offer the best yield on the markets, with bids compressing by 15bps D/D to trade at 14.10%, while the 2045s and 2050s were offered around 14.03%. Consequently, yields compressed by an average of c.3bps across the benchmark curve.

We expect the bonds to trade sideways in the interim as yields hit these resistance levels as the month draws to a close.

Treasury Bills

The T-bills market opened trading with a lot of offers seen on the newly issued 1-year NTB, with offers starting around 8.60% as holders of the paper expected demand from lost auction bids to come in strong. As the session progressed, bids remained firmly above 9.30% levels prompting offers to improve higher with trades happening between 9.20% to 9.25%. Improved system liquidity from May FAAC inflows saw some improvement in sentiment in OMO bills, with bids on the 15-Mar-2022 paper hit at 9.50% levels.

We expect trading to continue in similar patterns as investor demand remains focused on NTBs and short-term liquidity funding remains negative for OMOs.

Money Markets

System liquidity improved opening today, following the inflow from the May FAAC payment the night before. The liquidity inflow saw banks liquidate tenured funding from the CBN lending window, as the Repo lending figures dipped by 50% D/D. Open Buy Back (OBB) and Overnight (O/N) rates closed lower by 50bps on the average to close at 13.00% and 13.50% respectively at the end of the trade session.

We expect rates to elevate to close the week, as banks provide funding for the FX Retail auction tomorrow.

FX Market

Traded volumes at the IEFX space remained healthy, despite a 35% D/D dip, as $305mio was reported as traded. The Naira appreciated by N0.50k to close at N411.00/$, as the range of bids tightened to N400.00 and N420.22 to the dollar.

At the parallel, the Naira continued its downward spiral as both the transfer rates depreciated further by N2.00 to close at N500.00/$. The cash pulled back from the previous losses, appreciating by N0.50k D/D to close at N490.00/$.

Eurobonds

The NIGERIA Sovereigns had a mixed and calm trading session, as the previous session’s bullish run cooled today. Demand remained persistent on the short-dated 2022s and 2023s papers, while we saw more offers on the longer-dated 2038s and 2049s.

The NIGERIA Corporates papers continued to rally as demand from local and offshore players persisted for another consecutive session across all the tracked papers. The FIDBAN 2022s and ETINL 2024s were the most active papers during the session, with yields on both papers dropping by 3bps and 6bps respectively.

Dangote Cement Plc. had established this Programme pursuant to a resolution of the Company on January 22, 2020, for the repurchase of up to 10% of its total issued shares from the shareholders.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic had made it challenging to fully implement the Programme as planned.

With the stabilization of the stock market and improvement in economic conditions, the Board of Directors consequently decided that it is in the best interest of the Company to undertake further tranches of the Programme.
