Samsung Excites Consumers with Launch of the New S8 and S8+ (Event Photos)

The newest flagship smartphones from Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the Galaxy S8 and S8+, have been launched into the Nigerian market, following their unveiling at the company’s unpacked event in New York. The Galaxy S8 and S8+ feature polished metal chassis covered by curved Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back. The devices are available in Midnight Black, Orchid Gray and Maple Gold colours with internal memory of 64GB and up to 256GB microSD support. The Nigerian launch event took place at the Renaissance Hotel, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos, recently.

Boasting some of the largest wrap-around screens ever made, the long-awaited Galaxy S8 and S8+ come with 5.8-inch (14.73 cm) and 6.2-inch (15.75 cm) curved screens, respectively. Both devices have 1,440X2,960 screen resolution and are equipped 3,000mAh and 3,500mAh batteries, respectfully.

The display quality is Super AMOLED, featuring a new design named “infinity display”, which wraps around the devices in a smooth, perfectly curved pristine end-to-end screen, giving it a perfect symmetry while eliminating the bezels. Thanks to the new display, the physical home button usually located in the front of the phone has been replaced with a digital home button, built in the glass. Both devices feature a rear mounted fingerprint reader, quite close to the camera lens.

Speaking at the launch event, Managing Director, Samsung Electronics West Africa, Mr. Paul Lee said, “Samsung consistently pushes the boundaries of possibilities with a focus of unlocking value by delivering products that are, not only stunning to look at but, also comfortable to hold.”

“The launch of these smartphones marks the beginning of a new era of smartphone devices without edges or limits. This is a new way for our consumers to experience the world, capture every moment and share every memory through a device that is sleek and small enough to fit into their hands, but big enough to contain everything needed for work and play,” Mr. Lee stated.

The Galaxy S8 and S8+ come with exciting new features for remarkable user experience. The extended screen is perfect for multitasking. Users can open their favorite IM app whilst watching a video simultaneously, by using Multi Window; this is same for typing text with the full keyboard without having to hide the video.

The smartphones offer five types of security technologies: iris recognition, face recognition, pattern, password, and PIN; users can easily choose their preferred method. Users can use the iris scanner to unlock their devices without having to swipe the phone. With Face Recognition, users can instantly unlock their devices with just a look even without the PIN or pattern; simply look into the camera on the lock screen and the device is unlocked.

The Galaxy S8 and S8+ 12 MP rear camera utilizes Dual Pixel technology for incredibly fast autofocus, allowing users capture important moments. Thanks to the F1.7 lens, pictures appear bright and crisp even if taken in low-light environments. Samsung did revamp the front-facing camera to an 8MP with auto focus. This will definitely excite ‘selfie queens and kings’ as pictures come out sharp and vibrant.

Similar to the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, the Galaxy S8 and S8+ are IP68-certified for dust and water. This feature protects the device from immersion in up to 1.5m of fresh water for 30 minutes, allowing users capture memories at pool parties or on the beach with loved ones.

Director and Business Leader, Information Technology and Mobile, Mr. Emmanouil Revmatas, said that Samsung is delighted about these smartphones as they display the company’s heritage of great innovation and stunning design, and will continue to define barriers and ensure that consumers get the best out of their devices.

“The revolutionary design of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones begins from inside out. These devices come with several amazing features, including the infinity display which gives an incredible full screen experience and fits comfortably in the hands. The bezels have been removed to provide more space for things that matter and the bigger immersive screen that allow users multi-task seamlessly; chat while watching a video. These innovations will change the way users see their smartphones and everything in it,” Revmatas concluded.

Nigerian Breweries spent N22b on marketing/sales promo in 2016

Despite the challenging macroeconomic environment in 2016, Nigerian Breweries, the leading brewery in Nigeria remained undeterred in its marketing expedition, as the company spent over 22billion on marketing and sales activities within the year.

This was however 5 percent lower than the N23.5billion the company allocated for same purpose in 2015 according to the company’s 2016 Annual Report. Yet, it remained a major marketing commitment for the 70 year old brewery giant at a time when most multinationals were forced by the economic recession to cut deeply into their marketing spend, leaving most marketing communications agencies with little or no job to do.

Of course the decision by many companies in Nigerian to lower their marketing budget was justified by the difficult macroeconomic situation. The nation’s currency lost 70% of its value in the midst of a forex crisis that triggered high inflation and undermined consumer spending. But NB Plc’s big spending has ensured that the company continues to dominate the brewery market in Nigeria and remains a darling brand for consumer across demography.

In the year under review, NB Plc, despite declaring a 4.3 percent revenue drop in 2015 annual report, spent heavily on billboard, TV, radio, press and especially digital marketing. According to sources within the company, the company had actually increased to a significant proportion its digital budget in 2016 in a bid to re-engage the youth market and sustain brand loyalty.

Though the Gulder Ultimate Search which is usually one of the major marketing undertakings for the company, with big TV rating was discontinued, the company still had more than enough campaigns to thrill and excite its consumers. Some of the major campaigns that ran within the year was Maltina Dance Hall, Heineken Build Your City and of course 33 Friendship Experience Parties.

The brewery giant also strengthened its Ready To Drink category with the launch of Strongbow into the Nigerian market and the sponsorship of Ace Hood show to support the Ace brands. Amstel also continued its support for the movie industry with its sponsorship of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award. In the case of Star, the flagship brand on its stable, created a major emotional touch points with consumers by hosting Star Music- The Trek, which attracted some of the big names artistes in Nigeria and beyond.

The brand took the excitement a notch higher by pulling off an unprecedented activation when it unveiled its partnership with five leading football clubs in Europe. The clubs are Manchester City, Arsenal, Real Madrid, PSG and Juventus. The multimillion naira deal led to the rebranding of Star label.

Nigerian Breweries also demonstrated support for the indigenous art, culture landscape in Nigeria through sponsorship of the 2016 editions of the Oju Oba and Osun Oshogbo festivals through the Golberg brand. Life Beer also sustained its sponsorship of the Umu Oganiru Carnival.

NSE Automates Rights Trading and Settlement

The Nigerian Stock Exchange (The NSE or The Exchange) is pleased to announce the automation of Rights trading and settlement with effect from May 5, 2017. With this, shareholders can sell subscription rights both efficiently and at fair prices.
Executive Director, Market Operations and Technology, NSE, Mr. Ade Bajomo, said, “The automation of Rights trading and settlement in the Nigerian capital market will enhance price discovery as rights can now be traded and re-traded without settlement complexities. It will help eliminate operational challenges resulting from manual trading and cash settlement between counterparties, whilst simplifying counterparty trade reconciliation between the brokers, registrars and the NSE”.
Explaining the Rights trading and settlement process, Bajomo remarked that “for an investor to be eligible to participate in rights trading, he/she must have a CSCS account set up through a licensed Dealing Member firm of the Exchange. In addition, the investor must fund his/her broker with the consideration value, premium and transaction fees, prior to execution of his/her mandate”.
Prior to this automation, trading and settlement of rights, where an investor decides to sell on the floor of the Exchange, was done manually.
A rights issue is an offer to existing shareholders to purchase additional shares in a company during the company’s issue of new shares. The invitation to existing shareholders is usually made in proportion to their existing holdings, allowing them to buy the newly issued shares at a fixed price, usually at a discount to market value of the shares, within a specific subscription period. A rights issue is therefore one of the ways by which a listed company can raise funds from its existing shareholders. A unique security code, different from that of the underlying security will be assigned to the right.

Nigerians May Escape from Anxiety with a Stronger Naira – LBS EXECUTIVE BREAKFAST SESSION, May 2017

0

The Naira has appreciated by 25% in the parallel market in 10 weeks, but economic activity is lagging the currency gains.

Skeptical Nigerians are wondering whether this Naira momentum is sustainable. This is because a strong currency is not necessarily synonymous with a strong economy. The good news is that inflation is sliding and the FBN PMI, a measure of manufacturers’ confidence spiked by 6% to 58.9. More importantly, oil production is reported to be 2mbpd, a 32-month high.

These indicators confirm the notion that the long anticipated economic recovery may have started ahead of analysts’ expectation. This recovery however is vulnerable to exogenous and domestic political shocks.

In this edition of the Lagos Business School (LBS) executive breakfast club, Bismarck Rewane and the FDC Think Tank analyze pressing issues and trends, and identify the implication on market performance and socio/political developments.
