AiSP launches Singapore’s first ladies in cybersecurity mentorship programme to bolster country’s digital defence

Initiative aims to plug the industry’s talent gap, spur female participation in cybersecurity, and transform the role women play in Singapore’s defence

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – 27 November
2019 – The Association of Information Security Professionals
(AiSP) today launched a Singapore-first mentorship programme that will groom
female cybersecurity professionals in the republic. This move will boost the
number and skillsets of female cybersecurity talent, address the shortage of
cybersecurity professionals needed to tackle escalating online threats, and enable
women to play a bigger role in the nation’s defence.

As
the country continues to roll out Smart Nation initiatives and build up its
digital economy, the strengthening of cybersecurity capabilities and fostering of
a resilient and trusted cyber environment will be an immediate priority.

However, according to the  (ISC)2 Cybersecurity Workforce Study, there is a shortage of 4 million cybersecurity professionals globally.

AiSP’s Ladies in Cyber
Mentorship programme gives mentors the opportunity to share their life lessons
and work experience with interested students from Institutes of Higher Learning
(IHLs) in Singapore over one year, while providing them with guidance to enter
and advance in the cyber workforce.

Besides grooming the next generation of
cybersecurity talents, this programme also boosts the participants’
cybersecurity literacy, allowing them to develop the competencies to play a bigger
part in everyday digital defence.

[L-R] Ms
Sherin Y Lee, Head of AiSP’s Ladies in Cyber charter;  Dr Steven Wong, President of AiSP; Senior
Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information & Ministry of
Culture, Community and Youth, Ms Sim Ann; and Ms Diana Tan, Executive Vice
President of Ensign InfoSecurity at the launch of AiSP’s Ladies in Cyber
Mentorship programme

“There
is a critical lack of cybersecurity professionals in Singapore to defend our
digital assets and we need to do more to encourage women to join the
profession,” said Dr Steven Wong, President of AiSP. “Through our Ladies in
Cyber charter and newly launched mentorship programme, we want to start a
movement where female role models can inspire more women to take up
cybersecurity as a career option, and excel in their domains of choice.”

“Women
have every potential to play a larger role in Singapore’s defence,” said Sherin
Y Lee, head of AiSP’s Ladies in Cyber charter. “AiSP aims to help them along by
increasing their awareness of cybersecurity issues, drawing them into the
industry, and progressing to leadership positions. Such cybersecurity talent
development programmes will have a big impact on Singapore because we are so digitally
connected as a society − from the smart watches we wear to the utility meters
in our homes.”

Close to 50 mentors —
senior executives in the fields of cybersecurity technology, regulatory
compliance, audit, product management and marketing − have signed up for the
AiSP mentorship programme, and the association aims to double this number by
end-2020.

Students under the
programme will be able to hear about their mentors’ work goals, skills, career
progression strategies, education pathways and approaches to solving work
related problems. They will also be able to visit the mentors’ work environments,
attending meetings/conferences and reviewing documentation/publications
together. They will also get advice on job application, communication skills
and teamwork.

This first-of-its kind “Ladies
in Cyber” mentorship programme adds to the repertoire of programmes that the AiSP’s
Ladies in Cyber charter already has to develop cybersecurity manpower, such as secondary
school career talks, IHL engagement sessions, capture-the-lag cyber defence workshops,
and networking sessions. The wide range of activities is designed to cater to
women in different phases of life, and let them enter the cybersecurity world
at their own level of cyber readiness. For instance, the first step is to help
them be aware — through awareness talks − that cybersecurity is more than just
technology. At the next level, the women can be immersed in the profession with
guidance from seasoned female cybersecurity practitioners, showing them where
to pick up essential capabilities and progress in the field.

AiSP’s
Ladies in Cyber charter was set up in Nov 2018 to develop, advance and include women in the cybersecurity
field, with the aim of attaining greater gender diversity in the industry.
Run entirely by female volunteers from the industry, this charter serves as a
platform to facilitate knowledge transfer, networking and now mentoring — to
attract and develop cybersecurity talent.

SINGAPORE
– Media OutReach – 27 November 2019 – Chubb
recently held its annual Regional Day of Service in the Asia Pacific with almost
1,000 employees in 12 territories participating in community projects to increase
educational opportunities for underprivileged children.

A tradition which began in 2012, the annual Regional Day of
Service reflects Chubb’s firm belief that positive contributions to communities
return long-lasting benefits to society and the company’s employees and
business.

Strategic and Collaborative
Approach for Greater Impact on Communities

In addition to continuing with our focus on the theme of
Education@Heart, Chubb employees were also encouraged to collaborate with not-for-profit
organizations and business partners to craft initiatives that had lasting
impact on effecting change in our communities.

Once again, employees from both the general and life insurance
operations took up the challenge and worked together to plan and organize a
variety of strategic outreach programs that delivered real change for
beneficiaries.

quality education should be accessible to all. By empowering children with
useful skills and knowledge, they will have the opportunity to turn their
aspirations into reality and strengthen their communities. For this year’s
Regional Day of Service, the collaboration with partners to design programs
with long-term benefits reflect the spirit of giving and the company’s strong
commitment to corporate social responsibility.”

Cunqiang Li, Chief Operating Officer of Chubb Life added: “The Regional Day of Service
is an important annual initiative that underscores Chubb’s commitment to giving
back to the communities where we live, work and serve. By focusing our efforts

Teledyne e2v’s EV12DS480 Digital-to-analog Converter Approved for Space after Passing Performance Tests Under Ionizing Radiation

0

BREMEN, GERMANY – Media
OutReach
–  27 November 2019 – Teledyne
e2v today confirmed during its participation at Space Tech Expo that its EV12DS480
digital-to-analog converter (DAC)
has been approved for use in space
applications after it experienced irradiation tests.  The EV12DS480
is a 12-bit 8 GSps DAC, now ready for space applications, designed for Newspace
systems and offered in various reliability grades (including NASA Grade
1). This new DAC provides an analog bandwidth extending beyond 7GHz
facilitating multi-band, direct digital synthesis up to K-band (26.5GHz).

The series of tests included Total Ionizing Dose (TID) and
Heavy Ions (HI) measurements. The tests were carried out to show that
electronic components are capable of performing in a harsh space environment.
TID tests were performed to evaluate the functionality and performance
parameter drifts of the Device Under Test (DUT). Heavy Ions tests were
conducted at the RADiation Effects Facility (RADEF), specialized in applied
research around nuclear and accelerator based technologies. The HI tests
evaluate the Single Event Latch-up (SEL) and Single Event Effects, which
include Single Event Upset (SEU), Single Event Functional Interrupts (SEFI),
and Single Event Transient (SET). These tests are important to ensure
continuity and minimize drift.

“Tests on several EV12DS480 DAC devices are still underway
with a dose rate of 10 mrad/s, with neither failure, nor parameter drift up to
100 krad(Si). Teledyne e2v is planning to continue testing up to a targeted
cumulative dose of 150 krad(Si).” says  Romain Pilard, Application
Engineer from Teledyne e2v.

Exposure to heavy ions has allowed Teledyne e2v to draw the
following conclusions: no SEL was detected during the irradiation with a LET of
60 MeV.cm²/mg, with no tilt; SETs were observed during the irradiation from 3.6
MeV.cm²/mg to 69.3 MeV.cm²/mg; SEFI were observed during the irradiation from
3.6 MeV.cm²/mg to 69.3 MeV.cm²/mg but all these SEFI were successfully managed
by software reconfiguration of the DAC registers (no RESET, no power-up cycle
required).

About Teledyne e2v

Teledyne e2v’s innovations lead developments in healthcare,
life sciences, space, transportation, defence and security and industrial
markets. Teledyne e2v’s unique approach involves listening to the market and application
challenges of customers and partnering with them to provide innovative

Dodging the Recession Bullet – Nigeria grows at 2.28%

The Q3 GDP report was released this morning and surprised to the upside with a growth rate of 2.28% from revised growth of 2.12% in Q2’19. While this seems positive, the rate of growth is still way below the ERGP target (4.5%). This is an indication that the economy is in need of more fiscal incentives. The expansion in Q3 GDP can be partly attributed to the government’s anti-smuggling strategy and its positive effect on domestic production. Output growth was further supported by the harvest season and increased activities in the construction sector.

A breakdown of the report showed that most of the interest rate sensitive and employment elastic sectors showed slight improvement. This suggests that various government policies are having a medium-term effect. Of the 19 activities reported, 10 expanded, 5 contracted and 4 slowed.

GDP growth mirrors PMI trend

The purchasing managers’ index (PMI) is a measure of the performance of the manufacturing sector. The index increased to 56.2 points in September from 49.9 points in June. This sector benefitted from the relative stability in the exchange rate. The closure of the land borders also had a positive impact on output. The manufacturing sector was one of the fastest-growing sectors with a growth rate of 1.10%, up from a contraction of 0.13% in Q2’19.

The Nigerian economy is in need of more fiscal incentives

Economic growth is a function of fiscal policy and can only be complemented by monetary policy. While the Q3 GDP numbers showed that the recovery path is sustained, corporate earnings are still suffering. The inability of companies to pass on higher costs to consumers weighed on profitability and revenue growth. Consumer demand was also constrained by low disposable income. The economy needs more fiscal incentives to ensure that growth reaches its potential and full employment levels. Hence, it is expedient that the CBN’s current intervention strategy is supported by more investment-friendly policies in order to attract more foreign investment which is a catalyst for growth. Fiscal policies can, however, be complemented by monetary policy to enhance macroeconomic stability.

Sector Breakdown – 10 sectors expanded, 4 slowed while 5 contracted

An in-depth analysis of the GDP numbers showed that the fastest growing sectors are the interest-rate-sensitive and job-elastic sectors. The Agric, manufacturing and construction sectors expanded by 2.28%, 1.10% and 2.37% respectively. These sectors contribute approximately 40% to GDP and employ more than 30% of the labour force.

The slowing sectors include mining (6.19%) and human health (0.86%). The slow performance in the mining sector was largely due to dwindling oil prices. The average price of oil was $62.03pb in Q3’19, 9.35% lower than the average of $68.43pb in Q2.

The sectors with negative growth include – real estate (-2.31%), trade (-1.45%), and electricity (-11.81%). The trade sector is the first victim of the border closure.

Sub-Saharan Africa – Nigeria is one of the growing countries

Nigeria is one of the growing economies in Sub-Saharan Africa. Of the 11 SSA countries under our review, only Zambia increased monetary policy rate at its last MPC meeting. This is premised on the need to restore macroeconomic stability. With the monetary policy rates unchanged, the data confirms that fiscal incentives are critical in spurring economic growth.

Outlook

Consumer spending usually increases in the fourth quarter of the year due to festivities. This alongside the minimum wage implementation is expected to boost aggregate demand. Hence, we expect Q4 GDP growth to come in higher at 2.3%. At this rate, the average growth in 2019 will be 2.2%. This is inadequate to make a dent on the rising unemployment (estimated at 30%) or an impact on the lives of the average citizen. Hence, more fiscal incentives and investment-friendly policies are required to boost economic activities and attract foreign investment.

Domestic Violence Is Highly Prevalent In Nigeria Especially amongst Women and Girls – Report

Abuja, Nigeria. November 26th, 2019 – The United Nations’ (UN) International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was observed on the 25th of November 2019. The aim of the Day is to raise awareness on how women worldwide are subjected to rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence as well as emphasizing that the scale and true nature of the issue is often concealed. Violence against women is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in the world today and remains largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma and shame surrounding it. It has continued to be an obstacle to achieving equality, development, peace as well as to the fulfilment of women’s human rights. The promise of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – to leave no one behind – cannot be fulfilled without putting an end to violence against women and girls. Therefore, it is an opportunity for governments, international organizations and non-governmental organizations to raise public awareness of violence against women.

Against this backdrop and in commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, NOIPolls conducted a public opinion poll on domestic violence in Nigeria. The poll accessed the perceptions of Nigerians regarding Domestic Violence; its prevalence, practice, reporting of incidence as well as recommendations on how it can be curbed. The poll revealed that more than 8 in 10 (82 percent) Nigerians believe that domestic violence is prevalent in Nigeria and this assertion cuts across gender, geo-political zones and age-groups.

More findings from the poll show that despite prohibition by Section 34 (1) of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees the rights of Nigerians against torture and other cold-hearted or degrading treatment; the majority of Nigerians (82 percent) disclosed that domestic violence of men against women is prevalent in the country. Similarly, men are also at the receiving end of domestic violence as 43 percent revealed that domestic violence of women
against men is prevalent. Sadly, 70 percent stated that domestic violence against children is prevalent and the South-West zone (80 percent) make up the highest percentage of Nigerians with this perception.

Furthermore, with regards to Nigerians who have either suffered or know someone who has suffered any form of domestic violence, the findings revealed that 47 percent of Nigerians have either been victims or know a victim of domestic violence. Of this proportion, 63 percent disclosed that most victims of domestic violence are women.

Violence against women is a serious concern, hence, the call for more protection of women from the menace of domestic violence in the society. Incidence of domestic violence remains largely under-reported as 55 percent of the respondents disclosed that these incidences were not reported. Finally, this International Day and the 16 Days of Activism are a timely opportunity to raise awareness for the health and social consequences of violence against
women and strengthen the commitment to collective action in Nigeria. These are some of the key findings from the Domestic Violence Poll conducted in the week commencing 18th November 2019.

Nigeria MPC maintains status quo at final meeting of the year

Asia Pacific SMB Growth Ambitions Made Possible with Technology Refresh

  • About one-third use PCs
that are more than four years old with older or outdated operating systems
  • Perceived software
incompatibility and high costs cited as reasons for delay
  • To stay competitive, SMBs with Windows 7 devices should
make the shift before End of Support in January 2020

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – 26 November 2019 – Technology is a key
driver for business growth and workforce productivity but Small and Medium
Businesses (SMBs) in Asia are not upgrading their computing systems and
strategic IT applications such as cloud and mobility fast enough.

More than a third of
SMBs (36%) still own PCs that are more than four years old and running older
operating systems, which not only affect work efficiencies, but expose organizations
to security vulnerabilities and IT threats. Just in the last year alone, 62% of
SMBs surveyed said they had experienced a security breach. To top it off, majority
of SMBs (86%) lacked an organization-wide mobility strategy.

These findings were
revealed in the latest Microsoft study[1]
in partnership with global SMB IT market research and analyst organization TechAisle, which polled almost 2,000
SMBs across Asia Pacific.

“Technology can be a
real enabler for businesses, both small and large, and SMBs should continue to recognize
the value that IT investment can bring to their present and future growth. SMBs employ over half of the workforce in the Asia Pacific,
significantly contributing to the region’s economic growth[2]. Employees in this region,
most of whom are young and mobile, are digital natives and appreciate modern
work environments and tools that allow them to work smarter and more effectively.
We want to work
alongside SMBs in Asia to help them realize their ambitions and succeed in this
competitive marketplace,” said Belinda Widgery, Channel & Device Marketing
Lead, Microsoft Asia.

Narrowing the adoption
gap

According to the study,
the continued delay in SMBs’ adoption of newer technological infrastructure
across business functions, was due to factors such as perceived app
incompatibility and high costs associated with acquiring and maintaining new IT
hardware and software. Slightly more than half of SMBs surveyed (54%)
said they did not have a PC refresh policy nor were they actively pursuing it.

However, the reality
is that the lack of a strategic PC refresh policy can result in greater
repercussions in the long-run. There is a 3.1 times higher chance of old PCs requiring
repairs, which can amount to economic costs of at least US$2,657 per PC per
year, and result in at least 157 hours’ worth of productivity time lost.

One way to narrow the
technology adoption gap is with cloud adoption. More than half (54%) of SMBs
said they are aware of PC-as-a-Service offerings, with 40% planning to adopt
them within the next year. Key motivators for this include having the option to
acquire the latest technology faster (57%) and reducing IT support workload
across their business functions (55%).

Windows-as-a-Service
was also cited as another way SMBs can refresh their older PCs as it provides
security patches and regular OS updates for optimized use. Concerns over app
compatibility are addressed with Windows 10, the most app-compatible version of
Windows-to-date with best practices including app telemetry, ISV partnerships
for diagnostic data and troubleshooting as well as looping feedback cycles.  With the upcoming Windows 7 End of
Support
, SMBs have to make
their shift towards newer PCs and operating systems as users will no longer
receive security updates or support for PCs running on Windows 7. This includes
new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support
options, and online technical content updates.

[1] The Microsoft Make
the Shift study was conducted in September 2019. It involved 1,944 from 6
markets in Asia Pacific (Australia, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and
Thailand).

  • Respondents were IT
    and business decision makers.
  • Analysis had been
conducted per size of businesses; sample of SMBs were classified by the no. of
PCs within the businesses; (small businesses = 25-49 PCs, medium businesses =
50-99 PCs, larger businesses = more than 100 and up to 499 PCs)
