In 2018, Air France KLM’s revenues from African operations recorded a slight drop, Ecofin Agency noticed from the financial record published by the airline group. During the period under review, ticket sales reached €1.12 billion against €1.17 billion in 2017, representing a little more than a €50 million decrease.
The passenger transport segment for African destinations also dropped from €3.02 billion in 2017 to €2.9 billion in 2018.
According to the group, these counter-performances are due to the 1.6% reduction of the seat/kilometre offered. The passenger per kilometre has also decreased.
Let’s note that the African sky has become highly competitive with national companies trying to expand and large groups that offer an easier connection with commercial partners like the UAE.
However, the obvious price war does not allow traditional carriers to keep their market shares.
Air France KLM is also a shareholder in some firms of the African air market. These firms are Kenya Airways and Servair. In November 2017, its equity in Kenya Airways decreased from 26.73% to 7.76% due to debt restructuring. It then lost its influence over the African air company and now accounts it as equity.
