Gareth Southgate has announced his resignation as England’s manager, two days after losing to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

Southgate took over in 2016, when England’s fortunes were at a low point.
In the last four tournaments, he has led England to three semi-finals and two finals.
Prior to Southgate’s appointment, the Three Lions had only made three major tournament semi-finals and one final in their history, winning the 1966 World Cup.

“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England,” said the 53-year-old footballer.

The full statement reads: “As a proud Englishman, it has been the greatest honour of my life to play for and manage England.

“However, it is time for change and a new chapter. My final game as England manager was against Spain on Sunday in Berlin.

“In 2011, I joined the FA, determined to improve English football. During that time, including eight years as England men’s manager, I have been supported by some incredible people who deserve my heartfelt gratitude.

“I couldn’t have had a better teammate than Steve Holland. He is one of his generation’s most talented coaches and has had an enormous impact.
