The Nigerian Army has received up to one billion naira (£450,000) in highly advanced, non-lethal military equipment from the UK government. The equipment strengthens the continued alliance between the Nigerian Armed Forces and the British military.
The funding helps Nigeria combat deadly extremist groups in the country’s northeast. The equipment donation goes well with a brand-new, noteworthy educational package that the British military is offering.
Twenty British Army personnel are currently residing and working in Maiduguri, where they are teaching a course aimed at improving the vital skills required for ongoing operations against violent extremist groups in the Northeast. At a handover ceremony in Maiduguri, Major General Wahidi Shaibu, the Joint Task Force North East (JTF NE) Theatre Commander, accepted the equipment.
Colonel Martin Leach, the Commander of British Military Training Teams in Nigeria and the deputy head of the British Defence Staff (West Africa), spoke during the occasion.
According to Colonel Leach: “I am delighted to be here today to hand over this equipment and mark another development in the strong partnership between the United Kingdom and Nigeria. The UK stands with Nigeria in the continued
fight against violent extremist organisations in the North East.”
From now until February 2025, seven more courses will be offered with the goal of equipping Nigerian Army soldiers with the specialized knowledge and abilities needed for operations in the country’s northeast, BrandSpur national news stories report.
Furthermore, UK officers are currently temporarily stationed in the Theatre Counter-IED Coordination Cell in Maiduguri, where they collaborate with their Nigerian colleagues to gather intelligence on the jihadist networks that use IEDs to kill soldiers and civilians.
