At a grand inauguration event at Accra’s Black Star Square, Mr John Dramani Mahama was formally sworn in as Ghana’s president.
Thousands of Ghanaians attended the historic event, which was a significant turning point in the country’s democratic history, along with dignitaries and world leaders. The 65-year-old President Mahama takes office following a resounding win in the previous year’s presidential election, where he received 56.6 percent of the vote, compared to 41.6 percent for the then-Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
With voter participation of 60.9 per cent, this victory margin is the biggest to be witnessed in Ghana’s elections in 24 years. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is replaced by Mahama, who has pledged to solve urgent problems like unemployment, corruption, economic hardship, and environmental harm from illicit mining, or “galamsey” as it is known locally.
The inauguration of President Mahama is especially noteworthy since it marks a remarkable political resurgence following his tenure as president from 2012 to 2017.
The 2020 elections were a defeat for Mahama. His comeback to power has been praised as evidence of both the electorate’s desire for change and his tenacity.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the NPP have alternated power in Ghana since 1992, when multi-party democracy was restored. This triumph also carries on the country’s record of no party winning more than two terms in a row.
In the ceremony, which also served as a meeting of the ninth Parliament, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo administered the oaths of office to Mr John Mahama and Vice-President-elect Professor Jane Naane Opoku Agyemang, with the latter taking her turn first.
Before taking the oaths for their respective offices as president and vice president, they took the oath of allegiance.
President Mahama outlined his vision for Ghana’s future while addressing important national challenges in his inaugural address.
The administration of Mahama is confronted with formidable obstacles. Ghana had ongoing power outages, corruption scandals, and economic challenges throughout his previous term. His return is expected to usher in a new era of accountability and growth, according to many Ghanaians.
BrandSpur digital news platform reports that all eyes are on President Mahama’s government to fulfill its commitments and give the Ghanaian people hope as the country embarks on this new chapter under his direction. The legacy of his historic third term will be shaped in large part during the next few months.
