After being hacked, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) website has remained closed for almost three weeks. The website is still not operational, according to checks conducted by BrandSpur national news stories on Monday.

This is in advance of the December inflation report, which is anticipated to be made public the following week on January 15, 2025. On December 18, 2024, NBS reportedly acknowledged that their official website had been compromised.

The website was a statistical and informational archive, and NBS had pledged to restore it. This occurs as NSB’s 2025 budget of N9.85 billion includes N35 million for cybersecurity.

Following an NBS Experience and Security Perception Survey that revealed that 65 per cent of households had experienced kidnapping events and that Nigerians paid an estimated N2.3 trillion in ransom in a 12-months period, the hacking incident occurred. The validity of the survey has been a source of debate.
