The Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) for 170 hectares of land set aside for the Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kachia, Kaduna, has been given to the Federal Government.
The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, acknowledged this event when he invited Senator Sunday Katung and Senator Uba Sani, the governor of Kaduna State, to his office for the formal presentation of the land paperwork.
According to him: “In our ongoing efforts to expand STEMM education, I was honoured to welcome H.E. Sen. Uba Sani, Governor of Kaduna, and Senator Sunday Katung to my office for the presentation of the Certificate of Occupancy for approximately 170 hectares of land designated for the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia, Kaduna.”
The initiative, according to President Tinubu, honours Dr. Tai Solarin for his commitment to education and leadership at Mayflower School and Chief Obafemi Awolowo for pioneering free education in Western Nigeria.
He has this to say: “It is an opportunity for the Federal Government to honour Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who began the revolutionary free education programme in Western Nigeria and Dr Tai Solarin, who spent most of his life educating our children and impacting patriotic and leadership lessons in them at Mayflower School in Ikenne.
“It is also in honour of the Awujale of Ijebuland, who played a critical role in preventing the university’s closure in 2012, just seven years after its establishment,” he added.
To expedite the land acquisition process, guarantee the prompt issuing of the Certificate of Occupancy, and facilitate the transfer of title to the Federal Government, Governor Uba Sani was instrumental. His prompt action demonstrates his dedication to improving Southern Kaduna’s educational system.
The Federal Government was instructed by President Bola Tinubu to acquire Nok University in Kachia, Kaduna State, and convert it into the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia. This comes after an Abuja Federal High Court decision that ordered the private institution’s ultimate confiscation along with other assets connected to its founder, Anthony Hassan, a former Federal Ministry of Health finance director.

According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Hassan founded the university and associated companies, such as the Gwasmyen Water Factory, Gwasmyen International Hotel, and Gwasmyen Event Centre, using illegal money. Justice Abdulmalik ruled in favour of the EFCC after the court determined that Hassan had not provided sufficient evidence to demonstrate that the assets were lawfully obtained.
Furthering, the institution is anticipated to open for business by the 2025–2026 academic year, according to the Minister of Education. He said: “The Federal Ministry of Education remains committed to ensuring that the university opens its doors to students by the start of the 2025/2026 academic year. Furthermore, plans are already in motion to secure funding for the university from TETFUND.”
BrandSpur Nigeria news today reports that the Minister praised Governor Sani for his commitment to enhancing educational opportunities in Kaduna State and thanked Vice President Kashim Shettima for spearheading the project.
