Apple's New Software Design To Enhance System Experience Debuts With Liquid Glass Infused Into Its Creation

A stunning new software design that makes apps and system experiences more expressive and enjoyable while being instantly recognisable was unveiled by Apple, with Liquid Glass as a novel substance used in its creation.

BrandSpur technology and information news desk reports that this transparent substance reflects and refracts its environment while changing dynamically to emphasise content and add a new degree of life to controls, navigation, app icons, widgets, and other elements. To provide even more unity while preserving the distinctive features that set each platform apart, the new design is now available for the first time on all of them: iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, and tvOS 261.

Apple’s Vice-President of Human Interface Design, Alan Dye, stated: “At Apple, we’ve always believed in the deep integration of hardware and software that makes interacting with technology intuitive, beautiful, and delightful.

“This is our broadest software design update ever. Meticulously crafted by rethinking the fundamental elements that make up our software, the new design features an entirely new material called Liquid Glass. It combines the optical qualities of glass with a fluidity only Apple can achieve, as it transforms depending on your content or context. It lays the foundation for new experiences in the future and, ultimately, it makes even the simplest of interactions more fun and magical,” Dye added.

The new design leverages Apple’s significant advancements in hardware, silicon, and graphics capabilities, drawing inspiration from the depth and dimensionality of visionOS. In the actual world, the new substance, Liquid Glass, acts like glass since it is translucent. It cleverly adjusts its hue to light and dark conditions based on the material around it.

The design and engineering teams worked closely together to create Liquid Glass, which uses real-time rendering and dynamically responds to movement with specular highlights. As a result, using an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, or Apple TV becomes even more enjoyable. This stunning new content includes larger features like tab bars and sidebars for app navigation as well as the smallest elements that users engage with daily, like as buttons, switches, sliders, text, and media controls. Additionally, it excels in system experiences like the Control Centre, Lock Screen, Home Screen, and notifications.

Apple’s design team examined every facet of Apple’s platforms to find areas for improvement that could be applied universally, intending to draw more attention to material that users are immediately familiar with. Applications’ controls, toolbars, and navigation have all been updated. More harmony between hardware, software, and content is now achieved by their perfect concentric fit with the rounded corners of contemporary hardware and app windows, which were previously designed for rectangular screens.

Controls are a separate functional layer that sits on top of programs and is made of Liquid Glass. They make room for content and change dynamically when users navigate between sections of an app or require additional options. Additionally, users may more easily locate the controls they require when they are grouped thoughtfully.

In the same way, sidebars and tab bars have been revamped. In iOS 26, tab bars minimise when users scroll, highlighting content while maintaining instant access to navigation. Tab bars automatically enlarge as soon as users scroll back up.

Apps such as Apple TV are even more immersive in iPadOS and macOS thanks to improved sidebars. They guarantee that users always have a sense of their context by reflecting content and the user’s wallpaper from around them and refracting the content behind them.

It is expedient to know that fresh new experiences in apps like Camera, Photos, Safari, FaceTime, Apple Music, Apple News, and Apple Podcasts are all compatible with these updated design components.

However, with improvements to system experiences including the Lock Screen, Home Screen, desktop, and Dock, the new design is compatible with iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. The time is now made of Liquid Glass and gracefully adjusts to fit behind the topic of the photo wallpapers on the lock screen, keeping the attention on the subject.

Continuing, multiple layers of Liquid Glass have been used to create the Dock, widgets, and app icons on the desktop and Home Screen. With their gorgeous appearance and specular highlights, they offer more customisation choices while preserving the familiarity that customers have come to expect. For instance, users can personalise the desktop and Dock in macOS Tahoe 26 with widgets and program icons that transform into light or dark looks, as well as with vibrant new light and dark tints and a sophisticated new clean design. Additionally, a fully transparent menu bar that enlarges the Mac screen makes it even better.

The new design is simple for developers who use AppKit, UIKit, and SwiftUI, thanks to an improved set of APIs. With the new and updated controls and Liquid Glass materials, developers can redesign their programs to make every user interaction even more pleasurable and intuitive.
