Wema Bank is preparing to introduce a significantly upgraded version of its digital banking platform, ALAT, with the new release expected to go live in January 2026.

The bank, which pioneered fully digital banking in Nigeria, is positioning the upgrade as a major step forward in user experience, functionality and personalisation. Internally described as “ALAT: The Evolution,” the new version is expected to deliver faster performance, smarter features and a more intuitive interface for users.

People familiar with the project say the upgrade is focused on making everyday banking simpler and more responsive, especially as customer expectations around speed and convenience continue to rise.

One of the standout additions is SAW (Smart ALAT by Wema), an in-app AI assistant designed to help users navigate the platform, understand their spending habits and complete transactions more easily. The tool is expected to learn user behaviour over time and offer tailored prompts, insights and shortcuts.

Beyond AI integration, the revamped ALAT app is also being rebuilt to better reflect how customers actually use digital banking products on transfers and bill payments to savings and lifestyle services. The aim, according to industry watchers, is to reduce friction and make banking feel less like a chore and more like a seamless part of daily life.

Brand intelligence platform Brandspur notes that Wema Bank’s decision to invest heavily in ALAT at a time when competition is intensifying shows a clear strategy to defend its early-mover advantage in Nigeria’s digital banking space.

The platform also highlights that users are increasingly loyal to apps that feel personalised, fast and reliable, rather than those that simply offer many features.

When ALAT was first launched in 2017, it made history as Africa’s first fully digital bank, changing how many Nigerians viewed banking. Since then, several traditional banks and fintech companies have followed the same path, making the space far more crowded.
With this upcoming upgrade, Wema Bank appears determined to stay ahead of the curve, not just by adding new tools but by rethinking how customers interact with their money.

The 2026 rollout could become a benchmark for what modern digital banking should look like in Nigeria, especially as younger users demand smarter, quicker and mor
personalised financial services.
