Anne Kinuthia Otieno has resigned as Managing Director of Airtel Money Kenya after leading the mobile money business for nearly five years, marking another significant leadership change as Airtel Africa prepares to pursue a planned listing of its mobile money unit on the London market.
The executive’s departure comes at a pivotal time for Airtel Africa’s financial services business, which has been expanding across the continent as demand for digital payments and mobile money continues to grow. The planned listing is expected to unlock additional value for the business and strengthen its position in Africa’s fast-growing fintech sector.
The resignation also follows a series of executive changes within Kenya’s telecommunications industry. Brandspur Brand News reports that Airtel Kenya recently installed a new Managing Director, while rival operator Safaricom also announced the exit of its senior financial services executive, signalling a broader leadership reshuffle among the country’s leading mobile money providers.
Airtel Money has become one of Airtel Africa’s key growth drivers, providing digital payment, money transfer and financial services to millions of customers across several African markets. The business has continued to benefit from increasing mobile phone penetration and the rapid adoption of cashless financial services across the continent.
Although Airtel Africa has not announced a successor for Otieno, the leadership transition comes as investors closely monitor preparations for the proposed London listing, which is expected to play a significant role in the company’s long-term expansion strategy and capital market ambitions.
