Nigeria’s pension fund assets rose by N3.8 trillion in the first eight months of 2026, reaching a record N31.8 trillion as of August 31, according to data from the National Pension Commission.
The industry’s assets under management increased from N28.04 trillion in January, representing a 13.41 per cent year-to-date expansion. The growth continued in August, when pension assets added N289.4 billion, or 0.92 per cent, from the N31.5 trillion recorded at the end of July.
The latest figures also show the growing scale of retirement savings in the Nigerian financial system. Brandspur Banking News Desk reports that membership of Retirement Savings Accounts reached 11,391,008 contributors by the end of August, giving pension fund managers a substantial pool of long-term domestic capital.
Federal Government securities remained the dominant investment destination for pension funds, accounting for N17.80 trillion of the industry’s total assets. The large allocation reflects the continued preference for relatively lower-risk instruments within pension portfolios.
Domestic equities represented another major component at N6.32 trillion, while N280.66 billion was invested in foreign equities. Pension funds also held N3.27 trillion in money market instruments, including fixed deposits, commercial papers and bank acceptances.
Corporate debt securities accounted for N2.21 trillion, while mutual fund investments stood at N326.64 billion.
Pension fund administrators are also maintaining exposure to alternative assets as the industry gradually broadens its investment mix. Infrastructure funds accounted for N344.62 billion, while private equity investments stood at N267.01 billion.
Real estate investments were valued at N132.81 billion, with cash and other assets accounting for a further N462.42 billion.
PenCom estimated the total value of the pension industry’s assets at approximately $23.9 billion as of August.
The continued expansion has been supported by rising pension contributions, investment returns and increased participation in Nigeria’s contributory pension system. With assets now above N31 trillion and more than 11.3 million Retirement Savings Account members, the sector has become one of the country’s most significant sources of long-term capital.
The latest portfolio figures also show the balance pension fund managers are maintaining between security and diversification, with Federal Government securities still accounting for more than half of total assets while investments in equities, infrastructure and private equity continue to build.
