Nigerian Spotify users can now access audiobooks through an optional ₦2,300 monthly add-on that provides 15 hours of listening, as the streaming platform expands its service to more than 180 markets worldwide.
The Audiobooks+ package is available to both Free and Premium users in Nigeria. Subscribers who exhaust their monthly allowance can purchase an additional 10 hours for ₦2,700, while individual audiobook titles are also available for purchase and permanent access.
The launch gives Nigerian listeners another way to access books through the streaming app, with options to listen during commutes, walks or other daily activities. According to Brandspur Brand News, Spotify is also opening another distribution channel for Nigerian publishers and self-published authors through its Spotify for Authors programme.
The company said its audiobook partnerships are non-exclusive, allowing local publishers and independent authors to upload their titles and make them available to listeners across more than 180 markets. Authors and publishers can also access audience insights, while Spotify expects its Nigerian catalogue to expand as more partners join the platform.
The service includes features designed to connect listening with reading. Page Match allows users to scan a book’s ISBN barcode and locate the corresponding section in its audio version. Listening progress can synchronise across more than 2,000 supported devices, while offline downloads and a sleep timer are also available.
Spotify said monthly audiobook listeners grew by nearly 40% over the past year, while listening hours increased by more than 30%. Its Audiobooks+ subscription service, launched just over a year ago, has also surpassed one million subscribers.
To get started, users can update the Spotify app, open the Audiobooks hub or search for a title, then select a book and add the subscription. Unused listening hours reset at the end of each billing cycle, and only time spent listening counts towards the monthly allowance.
