Ijaw Youths Fume Over Petroleum Industry Act, Sends Message To Buhari, Sylva

0

Barely 48 hours after the passage and signing of the Petroleum Industrial Bill (PIB) into law, Ijaw Youths from the six states of the Niger Delta region declared that President Muhammadu Buhari and the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva are no longer welcome to the region over their roles.

The Ijaw Youths said despite the fact that the duo of President Buhari and Chief Sylva have the constitutional rights to move to any part of the country, their movement into the six states of the Niger Delta will be welcome with boos and disgraceful jeers due to their show of disregard to the plights and cry of the people of the region over the years.

The group under the aegis of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC), Worldwide, had earlier on Tuesday rejected the signing of the controversial Petroleum Industrial Bill (PIB) by President Muhammadu Buhari.

They said the signing of the PIB into law is a total affront to the outcry of the people of the Niger Delta region against the three percent provision for the oil-producing communities.

The National Spokesman of the IYC, Comrade Ebilade Ekerefe, in a statement issued to DAILY POST in Yenagoa, said the decision not to welcome President Muhammadu Buhari and Chief Timipre Sylva to the region was a further show of disdain to their drop in the ratings of the Niger Delta people and should not expect any accolades and congratulatory messages from the region.

Ekerefe insisted that the best course of action to have been taken by the President was to send the bill back to the National Assembly for upward review of the 3 percent equity share to host communities whose environments had suffered decades of oil exploration activities by the oil companies.

Therefore, a substantial percentage to the host community would’ve helped to address this age-long criminality. “Until that is done, there’s nothing to celebrate”.

On the explanation offered by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva on the 3%, Ekerefe described the explanation as an afterthought. He said what the Minister should’ve done as an illustrious son of the soil was to apologize and appeal to the consciences of our people, rather than justifying an act which is politically tailored to favor the north and its allies in the industry.

Ekerefe noted that it is a rape to justice and equity for the National Assembly to pass 3% equity share to the host communities while passing 30% to frontier basins which in our view is grossly inadequate and it is against the unanimous 10% agreement by stakeholders for Hostcom when the National Assembly visited the region.

“With the amount of speed the president used in signing the PIB without recourse to the stem stand by stakeholders from the region, the president has further demonstrated that the opinions of the Niger delta people don’t matter in his government as we’ve witnessed in other areas that require urgent attention of his government”.

“In the light of the foregoing, there’s no better time for the people of the Niger Delta region to intensify the struggle for resource control and self-determination, “We believe strongly that that will be the only sure path upon which our God giving natural resources can be managed by us and not this impunity we’ve witnessed from a repressive federal government under President Muhammadu Buhari”.

The media audit report further showed that Zenith Bank Plc emerged as the top spender with 39% share, with Access Bank Plc ranking 2nd with 24% percentage share.

Completing the top 5 are Polaris Bank Ltd., UBA Group and GTBank with 13%, 12%, and 12% respectively.

21st Century Daylight Executive Robbery: Rising Insecurity In The Nigerian Banking Sector

0

Most Nigerian banks are fast becoming an unsafe haven for keeping money and other valuables. Thus, the 21st-century daytime executive robbery is the new trend harnessing every nook and cranny in the finest country’s financial sector.

Many will agree that despite the Nigerian banking sector becoming one of the world’s fastest-growing institutions, it is getting flagged. Statistically, there are thousands of abnormalities trailing the success story rubbing the integrity of the institution.

The bank is hoping to be the last resort for securing people’s valuable against armed robbers, fraudsters, swindlers, etcetera; however, it is fast becoming the 21st-century daytime executive robbery.

In recent times, people are aware of the risk in keeping money at home, yet, you’d preferred to put your money at home because it is becoming more tasking to risk-taking your money to banks. Are you astonished as I’m?

In a corresponding capacity, let me set forth details of some obvious secrets that many Nigerian banks conceal revealing using their year-in-year-out (YOY) financial statements. Many reported cases of fraud and forgeries disarming banks to (unwittily) gave up billions of naira to fraud; however, this sheds light on some of the very financial institutions Nigerians entrusted their valuables in the modern age.

Typically, if banking dinosaurs still exist in our modern world, you would have agreed that you could barely make traces of gross financial misconduct across the Nigerian banking sectors. However, in this 21st century, some unforgivable errors are still recorded from giants banks.

Most of the time, through breach of banks’ security system. The bank security system may be either weak, poor, or not up to the world industry standards.

21st Century Daylight Robbery: Rising Insecurity In The Nigerian Banking Sector

For reference’s sake, there is no curse without a cause. On the 21st of February 2020, Zenith Bank PLC released its financial statement for 2019, and the report containing fraud and forgery was disturbing. The bank recorded a sum of ₦1,212,776,438 billion loss due to fraud and forgeries in 2019. More worrying, the staff perpetrated fraud accounted for 82.44% of the total loss.

Evidently, the staff perpetrated a fraud for the financial year 2018 accounted for only 67% of the total fraud case of the same bank. Other sources of fraud and forgeries familiar with Zenith Bank are stolen/forged instruments, impersonation, internet banking fraud, ATM fraud, among others.

Brand Spur Nigeria recalls that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arranged some staff of Fidelity Bank, UBA, and their accomplices who siphoned multimillion naira.

In 2019, Fidelity Bank lost about N1.362 billion to Fraud and Forgery, the figure disclosed in its financial reports. In the preceeding year, the bank lost N330.7 billion to Fraud and Forgery.

There was a reduction in cases of fraud and forgery, the total loss incurred by the financial sector rose more than 200%. Although the actual loss for 2019 stood at N337.3 million (337,355,205) as against N104million (104,321,657) lost in 2018. The financial institution barely reveals the numbers of its staff that were involved in partaking in the heinous actions.

Moving on, in 2020, Wema Bank Recorded 1,056 cases Of Fraud and Forgeries, sacrificing about ₦168.77 million to feed the anonymous.

Funnily enough, among the recorded cases, the bank staff recorded 11% of the total loss. In comparison, staff involvement in 1,056 incidents of fraud for 2019 was 14 cases; the total amount involved was ₦168.77 million and $3,100, and this resulted in the actual loss of ₦96.53 million and $3,100.

Alongside, Access Bank recorded cases of fraudulent transfers and withdrawals that occurred 38 times in 2019. It resulted in the ousted sum of ₦122,120,354 that accumulated 36.43% of the total loss for the financial sector. Cash theft and suppression occurred 73 times and resulted in the loss of ₦100,443,185, valued at about 29.96% of the total loss.

Similarly, a former member of staff of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) alleged to have swindled five customers of the bank about ₦15 million. The staff member of UBA, Monday Sule Ilemona, conned the customers through the marketing of a UBA Target Account. Alas, the customers lost to the fraudster. Despite outcries of the victims, to date, the bank has said nothing to counter the claim by the Foundation of Investigative Journalism.

Are Nigerian Banks Safe Havens Shielding Fraudsters?

In furtherance to back my points on how the financial institution is marred with frauds and forgeries with some forces within (staffers) and other forces (co-conspirators—fraudsters) are handicapping the better image of the institution into slavery and servitude at this age in our clime, placing Nigerian financial institutions’ integrity to appear as intractable backwardness.

UBA Staff Docked For Alleged Fraudulent Transfer Of Customer’s N10 Million

0

The Police on Tuesday arraigned a 36-year-old UBA staff, Tosin Adeyemi, before a Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan for an alleged fraudulent transfer of N10 million from a customer’s account.

Adeyemi was charged with the one-count offence of fraudulent transfer of customer’s money.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp. Opeyemi Olagunju, told the court that the staff of United Bank for Africa (UBA), Challenge branch, Ibadan, committed the offence between Aug. 12 and 13, at the branch.

Olagunju alleged that the defendant transferred N10 million from the UBA account of one Oladele Quadri domiciled at the branch without the customer’s consent and converted same to his own use. According to the prosecutor, Quadri had gone to withdraw money through the branch’s Automated Teller Machine (ATM) but could not retrieve his card from the machine.

He said the complainant consequently reported the incident at the Customers’ Care Unit of the branch where Adeyemi asked him to come back the next day.

The prosecutor told the court that when the customer went back two days after, he discovered that N10 million had been withdrawn from his account without his consent.

“Police was later invited to the matter,” the prosecutor said.

The offence contravenes Section 383 and punishable under Section 390 (8) (b) (9) of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The defendant however pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Defence Counsel, Mr Lekan Idowu, asked for bail for his client on most liberal terms.

He said the defendant had returned N8,750,000 to the customer’s account, remaining N1,250,000 as balance.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Olaide Amzat, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum, and adjourned the matter till Oct. 20, for hearing.

The President, Igbobi College Old Boys’ Association (ICOBA), Mr. Olumuyiwa Kinoshi, said that, “The 90th anniversary of the College is an important period to take stock of the past and plan for the future.

As you are all aware, ICOBA worldwide have invested heavily by way of donations and contributions in cash and kind to the development of the College in terms of infrastructure and upgrading the quality of teaching and learning, with the objective of bringing back the school to its once sterling standards, but a lot more remains to be done. He assured that his Association will continue working with stakeholders to ensure the improvement of the fortunes of the College.”

Also speaking at the launch, the Chairman of the 90th Anniversary Planning Committee, Mr. Femi Olubanwo, said that, “We normally celebrate the Founders’ Day with a week of activities – usually the Communion Service and Breakfast on February 2nd followed by the Thanksgiving Service, Luncheon and Merit Awards Ceremony the following Sunday and then a week later, celebrations by the Ibadan branch in Ibadan. However, given the landmark nature of this anniversary, the celebration will be a year-long series of events.”

According to him, “The occasion of the 90th-anniversary celebrations will create unrivaled conversations and opportunities for stakeholders. They can take part in activities supporting the educational upliftment of the pupils of the College and improve its infrastructures, making it the most inclusive anniversary ever.”

According to him, “Some of the activities planned for the year 2022 include the fundraising gala in Lagos to raise money to fund certain projects including apartment-type staff quarters, ultra-modern sports complex and technology hub on January 29th, 2022; Holy Communion Service on February 2nd; Conferment of the deferred 2021 ICOBA Merit Awards; Cocktails and Networking mixer celebrating ICOBA Wives worldwide on 5th February; followed by the Thanksgiving Service and Luncheon, including the ICOBA Merit Awards on February 6th, 2022. This time, the anniversary is producing both an audiovisual documentary and a coffee table book.”

“In an unprecedented move, a special website has been created for the 90th Founders’ Day Anniversary to offer a unique opportunity for the stakeholders from across the globe the chance to glean the calendar of the programmes of the anniversary celebrations and be part of the largest group of people demonstrating acts of kindness and doing social good for the College,” he enthused.

Igbobi College was established by the Methodist and Anglican Churches in 1932. It is still on its original site and most of the original buildings are intact. It is one of the oldest legacy colleges in Nigeria and has been the alma mater of many well-known Nigerians.

Uganda Confirms Polio Outbreak

The Ministry of Health has declared Polio a Public Health Emergency in Uganda following confirmation of positive laboratory tests from environmental samples in Kampala.

The samples were collected from the sewage plants in Bugolobi and Lbigi which are two of the sentinel environmental surveillance sites in Kampala. Results from the tests carried out at Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) confirmed a circulating Vaccine Derived Polio Virus type 2(cVDPV2). The virus detected has genetic linkage with a cVDPV2 strain reported in Sudan.

Uganda and the entire Africa were certified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as wild-Polio virus-free in August 2020. Polio is a viral disease that is transmitted from person to person, mainly through a fecal-oral route or, less frequently, through contaminated water or food, and multiplies inside the intestines.

However, Polio resurged with another strain known as the ‘Circulating Vaccine Derived Poliovirus (cVDPV)’ that affects children in communities with low immunity levels. In the past 12 months, over 19 African countries have declared cVDPV2 outbreaks, including three countries bordering Uganda: the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Sudan, and Kenya.

While mitigating the COVID-19 pandemic, delivery of essential health services including routine immunization have been affected considerably, which implies fewer numbers of children were immunized against the vaccine-preventable diseases. This slowdown has led to resurgence of Polio globally, including Uganda.

Uganda Confirms Polio Outbreak-Brand Spur Nigeria
Uganda Confirms Polio Outbreak-Brand Spur Nigeria

The resurgence of Polio in Uganda may be attributed to the reduced routine immunization and Polio immunization rates in the country during the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, incessant cross-border movements among our neighbouring countries and the countries from the Horn of Africa region currently affected by cVDPV2 outbreaks pose a risk of further Polio-importations to the country.

At the forefront of the global Polio eradication efforts, Uganda was certified free of all Polioviruses in 2006. However, it has been under constant threat of Polio importation from other Polio-endemic countries in the region, asseen in 2009 and 2010 when Polio importations were reported in Mayuge and Bugiri respectively.

In order to address this, the Ministry conducted a total of 23 cycles of national or sub-national Polio immunization campaigns.

Polio does not respect borders and is spreading fast in the East African region putting children – particularly aged 5years and below – at the risk of contracting this incurable disease yet vaccine preventable disease.

In response to the Polio outbreak, the Ministry of Health has heightened surveillance of Polio in the country by Intensifying search for Polio cases in all health facilities by reporting and investigation of all children under fifteen years with sudden onset of paralysis or weakness in the arms or legs and expansion of environmental surveillance.

Additionally, the Ministry will conduct a nationwide Polio immunization campaign in October and December 2021 during which health-workers will visit house-to house and vaccinate all children aged 5 years or below against Polio. All health workers participating in the campaign will wear masks and strictly observe the COVID-19 SOPs to ensure children are safely vaccinated.

In the meantime, parents and guardians are encouraged to ensure that all children under the age of five years are fully immunized as per the country’s routine immunization schedule.

The Ministry of Health will announce the specific dates for the vaccination campaign through the national media, announcements, posters, and banners, to inform parents of the campaign and ensure that their children are vaccinated and protected from Polio.
