Award-winning film on the Weaponization of Information ‘INFLUENCE’ available in Nigeria

INFLUENCE, the award-winning feature-length documentary film charting the rise and fall of the infamous London-based PR firm, Bell Pottinger, has travelled the world since its premiere at Sundance Film Festival in 2020 and is now available to watch for free in Nigeria.

Directed by South African journalists and filmmakers Richard Poplak and Diana Neille, , Influence is a David and Goliath tale of ordinary people facing off against a powerful corporation with near-infinite resources — an imbalance that has become all too familiar globally.

The film serves as a terrifying reminder of the dangers that lurk within the post-truth era, in which masters of disinformation use new digital tools to wage ancient propaganda wars — undermining the very fabric of democratic societies. Nigerians have firsthand experience of this infowar, with President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration recently facing off with activists and free-press advocates over the banning of Twitter.

Speaking on the purpose of the film, co-director, Diana Neille, stated:

“After following the story deep into the roots of modern geopolitical spin-doctoring, we discovered the fingerprints of Bell Pottinger’s founder, Lord Tim Bell, on many of the world’s most formative political campaigns. We felt that if our viewers comprehensively travelled Bell’s journey since the 1970s, we would end up telling the story of influence and how it helped establish what we now call the post-truth era. It’s the context in which so many democracies around the world are now floundering.”

Produced by Neil Brandt of Storyscope (SA) and Bob Moore of EyeSteelFilm (Canada), Influence takes its cue from the #GuptaLeaks, a trove of emails investigated by a team from South Africa’s Daily Maverick, amaBhungane and News24. In mid-2017, they exposed Bell Pottinger’s role in engineering a racially divisive PR campaign designed to benefit the notorious Gupta family, the underworld financiers of the former president, Jacob Zuma.

Several months later, due to unrelenting pressure from the media, civil society, opposition politicians and South African citizens, the once-unbeatable multinational was forced to close its doors.

The Producer of the film, Neil Brandt of Storyscope, had this to say,

“As storytellers from the Global South who have always tried to speak truth to power. INFLUENCE puts a uniquely African narrative at the centre of a global debate around the nature of truth in a world in which fact and fiction appear interchangeable. As Leonard Cohen put it, ‘there are cracks in everything — that’s how the light gets in’.”

The film and website have been made available to access for free across Africa and the UK, in partnership with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom

Influence is an official South African/Canadian co-production, with backing from the Blue Ice Docs, Hot Docs Partners Fund, the Rogers Cable Network Fund, the Société de développement des Entreprises culturelles, the National Film and Video Foundation of South Africa, and Canada Media Fund. Broadcast rights are currently held by Arte (France/Germany), documentary Channel (Canada) and eTV (SA). Cinetic Media is handling world sales.

Ghana opens tomato processing factory under 1D1F initiative

Ghana President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commissioned the US$16 million Weddi Africa Tomato Processing Factory, a company operating under the One District, One Factory initiative (1D1F initiative), at Domfete, in the Berekum West District of the Bono Region, on Tuesday 10 August 2021.

According to President Akufo-Addo, the establishment of the factory is an example of the critical role the private sector can play in Ghana’s industrial transformation, adding that the setting up of this manufacturing facility, outside the traditional areas of Accra, Tema, and Takoradi, underscores the commitment of the government to decentralize industrial development, and, thereby, stimulate economic activity in the rural areas.

He explained that Domfete was chosen for the siting of the factory because the town happens to be one of the major catchment areas for the cultivation of fresh tomatoes, and will help in reducing rural-urban migration.

The factory will process some 40,000 metric tonnes of fresh tomatoes per annum, and also has a 500 metric ton cold room facility to store fresh tomato fruits. In addition, a model farm and research centre designed to conduct seed trials and train farmers on best farm practices, as well as an agric-input Shop to supply inputs to the farmers at affordable prices, have been established by the company.

This, the company explains, will boost the profitability of the factory and improve income levels for the farmers engaged by the company.

Additionally, 2,400-acre farmland as a nucleus farm has been set up by Weddi Africa, with the company also spearheading the establishment of a Tomato Outgrower Farmers Association in Tano North and Berekum West districts, with 2,000 registered farmers from Ahafo and Bono regions.

These 2,000 farmers are on schedule to receive seeds, fertilizers, other inputs, and technical services from the relevant MDAs. These Government supported mechanisms have been put in place to provide the requisite support services to ensure the profitability and sustainability of the factory.

Thus far, the factory has created some one hundred and fifty-eight (158) direct jobs, with some two thousand, one hundred (2,100) indirect job opportunities also created for the people of Berekum West District and surrounding communities.

Government, President Akufo-Addo assured, is committed to supporting private sector operators like Weddi Africa Limited to position themselves to become globally competitive, and, thereby, take advantage of market integration frameworks, such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), whose Secretariat has been established in Accra.

Indeed, the Ministry of Trade and Industry in collaboration with relevant MDAs has established an institutional mechanism to provide strategic support and assistance to the local private sector operating at the district level.

This is in reference to the establishment of Business Resource Centers as one-stop enterprise support centers in 67 districts across the country, 37 of which have already commenced operations and 30 are under construction. The 1D1F companies will benefit from the assistance to be provided by these BRCs.

The President commended the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI), Food & Drugs Authority (FDA), and various Stakeholders for the support they have provided to the company.

He also commended the Chief Executive Officer of Weddi Africa Limited, Yaw Boahene, and his Team for establishing such a modern manufacturing facility in Domfete near Berekum in the Bono region, in support of the government’s Industrial Transformation Agenda.

Sujimoto’s Lucrezia De Medici: Luxury at its Apogee

With Sujimoto, there is no pretence. There is no Nigerian signature-pretence for modesty. For a company that prides itself as having ‘zero tolerance for mediocrity and whose major target audience is the ‘discerning client who wishes to be associated with bespoke and iconic structures,’ there is no ambiguity about what the company stands for and offers.

Sujimoto is a luxury real estate developer with a strong presence in Ikoyi and Banana Island, places known for their intimidating opulence and glamour. It is in these places that the company‘s core competencies in residential development, commercial development and hospitality are based.

However, it is with Lucrezia De Medici that the company has cemented its place as the Rolls Royce of luxury real estate. There is no gainsaying the fact that Rolls Royce is beyond the reach of commoners. For Lucrezia, even an accidental member of the elite cannot afford it. It is for the 1% of the 1%.

Lucrezia by Sujimoto is the tallest residential building on Banana Island. The property is a product of extravagant attention to luxurious details. BellaNaija reports how Sijibomi Ogundele, Sujimoto’s Managing Director revealed that the company invested over 660, 000 euros (N352, 000,000) to getting the Oikos doors, alone.

It is definitely a convergence of luxury, extravagance, and zeal to enjoy the very best life has got to offer. Oikos has the reputation for being the “Rolls Royce of door automation” while Sujimoto is the foremost luxury developer, the Rolls Royce of the industry. What do we expect? Birds of a feather flock together. It is worth mentioning that Lucrezia is the first residential condominium in Africa to have these exclusive doors.

The Yoruba people do say ‘the sumptuous meal’ is only made possible by money. Never has the saying been more apt. Apart from the employment of Oikos door luxuries, other elite features of the building, according to the company’s MD are ‘luxury crèche to nurse the leaders of tomorrow, the indulgence of an infinity pool, immersive experience of an IMAX cinema, the presence of the prestigious Zaha Hadid by Porcelanosa sanitary wares, a virtual Golf Bar with over 2500 courses among others.’

The aim, he said, is that by the time the building is completed, ‘no other building will have the opportunity to stand beside it.’

Sujimoto

No wonder therefore that owning the Lucrezia is the exclusive privilege of the 1% of the 1% and can never be the right of the commoners. Those who can afford it will live their paradise reality on earth while the rest of the mortals who cannot can continue dreaming.

One thing is sure though: Sujimoto Construction has elevated luxury to0 its apogee with their Lucrezia De Medici located right inside Africa’s foremost highbrow neighbourhood of Banana Island.

Binance ranks Nigeria as the country with the highest crypto adoption

0

In a recent survey that evaluated dozens of countries according to crypto usage, Nigeria ranks 1st as the country with the highest crypto adoption in the world.

According to recent data published by Binance, the largest cryptocurrency platform by trading volume, Nigeria ranks 1st globally as the leading country per capita for Bitcoin and cryptocurrency adoption, with nearly one-in-three Nigerians indicating they used or owned crypto assets in 2020.

With around 300 million users as of 2021, crypto is more ubiquitous than ever. That being said, there’s still plenty of room for crypto to grow and spread worldwide; despite the growing numbers, 300 million crypto users is only 4% of the world’s population.

Here are the Top Five Countries for Crypto Adoption

1. Nigeria – 32%

Topping the list is the African nation of almost 200 million people, mainly on the younger, more tech-savvy side. With most Nigerians adept at sending money and paying through their phones, almost a third of Nigerians surveyed by Statista have used or owned crypto at some point. Nigeria ranks 1st globally as the leading country per capita for Bitcoin and cryptocurrency adoption, with nearly one-in-three Nigerians indicating they used or owned crypto assets in 2020.

2. Vietnam – 21%

This economically fast-rising Southeast Asian nation of nearly 100 million has also seen huge demand in crypto, with activities varying from trading and P2P to payments and other utilities. According to Chainalysis, crypto traders raked in $400 million in crypto earnings in 2020.

3. Philippines – 20%

Another Southeast Asian country with an economic and demographic situation similar to Vietnam’s, the island-nation has shown that it is adept at adopting crypto. The country’s central bank has provided licenses to crypto companies, while its government is distributing bonds through a blockchain app. On the grassroots level, the nation is becoming a hotspot for blockchain-based play-to-earn games.

4. Turkey – 16%

At the crossroads of Europe and Asia, in this country, crypto companies have become so big that they sponsor national football teams, while football clubs also offer blockchain-based fan tokens. Some Turkish people have gone on the record to say Bitcoin is their primary alternative for investment, which is unsurprising given that the nation recorded $300 million in Bitcoin gains last year.

5. Peru – 16%

Latin America has been a hotbed for crypto adoption, with countries like Brazil, Argentina, and Venezuela seeing major activity on the crypto front in response to their respective economic situations. While at least six Latin American countries saw crypto adoption reach percentages in the double digits, Peru is the most advanced of these nations.

33,140 Passengers Transited Lagos-Ibadan Railway in July – NRC

0

At least 33,140 passengers transited through the Lagos-Ibadan railway in July, the Lagos District Manager, Nigeria Railway Corporation, Mr Jerry Oche, has said. According to him, the corporation recorded 33,140 passenger traffic from the standard gauge railway in July.

Oche, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday, was quoted in a statement as saying that the NRC recorded more passengers in the standard class coach category.

He said, “In July, the total passenger traffic on board the standard class stood at 24,948, out of the 33,140 passenger traffic. For business class, we recorded 6,995 and for first class, we had 1,167, while the total passenger traffic recorded from Lagos to Ibadan in July stood at 33,140.”

He also noted that 7,134 passenger traffic was recorded from Lagos alone, while the increase in July was as a result of awareness and expansion in the trip after the inauguration.

Speaking on the train coaches being used by passengers, he said, “We are not using all the door coaches; we opened two doors, one for standard class and the second for business class and first class. Every ticket has a coach and seat number, and we also have officials who are on the ground to direct passengers. Passengers always sit according to their ticket numbers.”

Oche stated that the corporation’s management was working towards introducing snacks in the lounge, adding that they were only awaiting directives from Nigeria Centre for Disease Control before its commencement.

He said the signalling had not been delivered, adding that without the delivery, the train’s speed and turnaround time of the standard gauge railway would not be increased.

He said that the allowed luggage on board the standard gauge was 25kg per person, and that excess luggage attracted additional payment.

The district manager further said that a lot of banks had written to partner with NRC to enable passengers to access money to purchase their tickets, adding that currently, passengers were using Point of Sale for payment of tickets at rail stations.

Achieving Workplace Productivity With Innovative Technological Tools

Organizations that are result oriented are usually obsessed with getting the needed work done within the expected timeframe as they also expect to get value for the efforts in maintaining their staff strength.

There are many metrics used to measure productivity in order to ensure the team always puts the expected concerted efforts with the aim of reaching a target goal, however measuring the team’s productivity has unique advantages such as giving their peak at any given time to assigned tasks and avoiding waste of time on unnecessary tasks.

There are consequences if an organization fails to track the productivity of its staff as this would lead to complacency and there would not be much room for improvement since the state of individual and corporate productivity is unknown.

Workplace Productivity

Some technological tools to help programme the team and workplace into high performance are explored as follows:

  1. Time Tracking e.g. Timesheets

Different technologies have been developed to keep track of time which can then be used to calculate the total utilization of particular staff. Although the total number of hours spent does not necessarily imply the greatest productivity. Tools such as the digital log in with fingerprints have helped to make progress, but on the other hand, are timesheets which is a website or an app that can be installed on a mobile device. A person can clock in and clock out and as well go on break. It is very helpful because the moment a person logs in, it informs the admin of the particular time a login is made by sending an automated email. Pictures of the staff logging in can also be taken while logging in not just to track time automatically but the authenticity of the location, clothes worn and facial expressions. Metrics of all logins are then summarized daily, weekly and on a monthly basis.

  1. To do Lists e.g Trello

Lack of organization on what tasks should be prioritized could lead to randomness in carrying out a job function, however, with a to-do list, weekly tasks can easily be scheduled by each individual. The task of every staff member can also be seen by everyone and not just the admin. When a task has been completed, it can be moved to a new tab called “done or completed”.

The overall weekly task can now be broken in daily priorities of what should be achieved. A team member can easily be motivated to work on their task as the progress made by others can be seen.

  1. Team Collaboration e.g Slack, Bitrix24

While emails are important for work-based communication, there have been ethical issues around whether team members should keep their official email active on their mobile devices or not when work is completed for the day. Although most email services have features to support the receipt of official mails on mobile devices, it does not significantly support team collaboration especially on other office activities such as quick reminders, memos, an emergency meeting or informal schedules.

Tools for team collaboration can easily be installed and messages in the form of text, images or documents can be sent directly to a person’s inbox or shared on a general or private channel as created by the admin and other users.

The encryption in the use of these platforms is also necessary in order to keep the confidentiality of every conversation.

  1. Brainstorming e.g Stormboard

The user experience (UX) in the use of tools to support or replicate a physical experience is a fantastic approach most especially when a team has to brainstorm on a variety of ideas.

Brainstorming has to do with coming up with new ideas by different team members and making a vote on which should be accepted on the note. Brainstorming tools make this happen by supporting the expressing of every individual’s opinion which can be seen by all and making a vote on which of the ideas to accept or implement.

  1. Calendars e.g Google Calendar, Calendly

One way to keep track of what the future holds is to record every single thing. Executives are usually involved in a plethora of activities and although the brain can keep millions of information, it is best to always have the good old diary for keeping important meetings. Online diaries in the form of calendars can now help professionals become productive as they can get reminders of upcoming meetings or events without having to forget what matters

There are many tools to help maximize productivity and I hope the ones reviewed here would help add value to respective job roles.
