Nearly 115,000 Apps Removed From Google Play Store In H1 2021

0

As one of the two largest distribution channels for mobile apps, Google Play has witnessed a surge in revenue and the number of downloads over the years. In 2020 only, Google Play Store hit 108.5 billion downloads and $38.6bn in revenue, a massive 30% jump YoY, while Android users could choose between 3 million apps. However, the number of apps available in the Google Play Store has dropped this year.

According to data presented by Safe Betting Sites, nearly 115,000 apps have been removed from the Google Play Store in the first half of 2021, the first decrease in three years.

Almost 65,000 Apps Removed In May Alone

Over the years, the number of available apps in the Google Play Store has exploded. In July 2014, Android users could choose between 1.3 million apps. By March 2018, this figure almost tripled and hit an all-time high of 3.6 million. After a significant drop to 2.8 million in the next six months, the number of apps continued rising and hit over 3 million again by September 2020.

However, to ensure the quality and trustworthiness of the apps within its app market, Google has released a series of policies to regulate app developers. As a result, thousands of low-quality and policy-violating apps have been removed by Google Play periodically.

In April, Google introduced a set of new policies and guidelines on how to present Android apps in the Play Store and announced removing all apps with misleading names and graphics.

The Statista and AppBrain data showed that Google removed more than 58,000 apps from its App Store between January and April. Most of them were regular apps, and only 4,500 were low-quality apps.

However, in May alone, the total number of apps was cut down by another 65,000, the highest drop in years. Google’s restrictive policy continued in June, with additional 4,300 apps being removed from the Google Play Store.

Despite that, Google Play still convincingly leads in the total number of available apps. Statistics show Android users could choose between 2.8 billion available apps as of this month, compared to over 2.2 billion apps in App Store.

Google Play Hit 56.2B Downloads In H1 2021, 3.5x More Than App Store

Last year witnessed a record number of app downloads, as millions of people spent more time indoors and online amid the COVID-19 lockdowns. The surge in the use of mobile apps continued in 2021, with the number of downloads rising to new highs.

Statistics show Google Play hit 56.2bn downloads in the first half of 2021 or 3.5 times more than the App Store. Also, this represents a 6% increase compared to a year-ago period.

The Sensor Tower data also revealed that Google Play revenues practically doubled in the last three years and continued growing in 2021. Between January and June, Android users worldwide spent $23.4bn on Google Play apps, 30% more than in the same period a year ago.

However, App Store still convincingly leads in revenue, with $41.5bn in user spending between January and June 2021.

Nigerian Government Set To Lift Twitter Ban

..Twitter To Open Nigerian Branch In Soon

The federal government of Nigeria has announced its intention to lift the ban on Twitter soon

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed made this known after briefing State House correspondents at the end of the virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC).

He explained that the federal government’s engagement with Twitter has been extremely positive without any acrimony.

The Minister said ”We have made it clear what we want from Twitter. The end for amicable resolution is very much insight.

‘We appreciate the patience of Nigerians. I want to assure you that we have made very tremendous progress. We have met with Twitter both physically and in writing. We are actually almost there.

“They (Twitter) have shown a lot of flexibility, the conversation has not been acrimonious.”

Mohammed added that although there are about three to four areas the two were yet to reach an agreement, Twitter has agreed to open an office in the country in 2022.

The federal government of Nigeria has announced its intention to lift the ban on Twitter in a matter of days.
The disclosure was made on Wednesday by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed while briefing newsmen shortly after the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja.

Mohammed stated that the government negotiation with the micro-blogging platform is at an advanced stage already, saying most of the conditions given to the platform have been accepted.

He revealed that areas still pending include setting up an office and having a Twitter staff of management cadre that will serve as the country representative.

He disclosed that the microblogging platform had already agreed to set up an office in Nigeria, but that the earliest it could do that was 2022.

Brand Spur Nigeria recalls that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari had on June 4, 2021, ordered the indefinite suspension of Twitter in Nigeria.

The directive was sequel to the deletion of Buhari’s tweet where the President made reference to the nation’s civil war experience, which according to Twitter violated the rules.

Following the ban, many Nigerians, including civil society groups had condemned the decision of the federal government to ban Twitter in the country, arguing that it was an attempt to gag free press.

Some persons in order to bypass the government restriction and continue to use Twitter did so through the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPN).

Norton Buys Avast For Over $8 Billion

0

US cybersecurity giant NortonLifeLock has agreed to buy Czech rival Avast for more than $8 billion (6.7 billion euros) to create a leading cyber consumer business, the pair announced on Wednesday.

“This transaction is a huge step forward for consumer cyber safety and will ultimately enable us to achieve our vision to protect and empower people to live their digital lives safely,” Norton chief executive Vincent Pilette said in a joint statement.

Ondrej Vlcek, chief executive of London-listed Avast, said that amid increasing global cyber threats, the tie-up would allow for “enhanced solutions and services, with improved capabilities”.

More than 500 million users will benefit from the new group’s safety offerings, the statement added.

Pilette was set to become chief executive of the expanded group, while Vlcek is to join NortonLifeLock as president and become a member of the NortonLifeLock board.

The combined company, to be listed on the Nasdaq, will be dual headquartered in Prague and Tempe, Arizona.

Businesses worldwide are at threat from an increasingly lucrative form of digital hostage-taking, or ransomware attacks, that typically see hackers encrypting victims’ data and then demanding money for restored access.

A massive ransomware attack on US tech firm Kaseya in July affected businesses from pharmacies to gas stations in at least 17 countries.

While Kaseya was little known to the public, analysts say it was a ripe target as its software is used by around 40,000 businesses, allowing the hackers to paralyse many companies with a single blow.

“At a time when global cyber threats are growing, yet cyber safety penetration remains very low, together with NortonLifeLock, we will be able to accelerate our shared vision of providing holistic cyber protection for consumers around the globe,” Vlcek added Wednesday.

US cybersecurity officials last week announced that Amazon, Google and Microsoft had enlisted to help them fight ransomware and defend cloud computing systems from hackers.

The tech giants are among firms signed on to be part of a Joint Cyber Defense Collaborative intended to combine government and private skills and resources to fight hackers, according to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

Lagos State Commends Alpha Mead’s Modular Healthcare Facility

0

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, has described the Modular Healthcare Facility (MHF), recently launched by Alpha Mead Healthcare Management Services (AMHS) as an exciting innovation that will boost access to healthcare in Nigeria.

He said this during an inspection and walkthrough of the MHF at the Gbagada General Hospital earlier today.

The MHF, is a fully-equipped healthcare facility that can be built and operational within 30 days. It is a prefabricated, customizable, and transportable portacabin with installed medical equipment and healthcare technology applications that can be set on wheels, coupled together, and start operations in few days.

Speaking to journalists after the inspection, the commissioner said: “It’s innovative; nice. It’s well organised and clean. It has a robust array of facilities within it and can be used in specific locations. I’m happy to see it’s an indigenous product; it has all the required technical backdrops. It’s also energy conscious. It’s mobile”.

The Commissioner also expressed the Government’s willingness to collaborate with AMHS to deploy the facility, noting that the MHF will come handy in interim and stop-gap situations where the government haven’t erected physical structures yet. “ I can see opportunities here,” he noted.

Briefing the Commissioner before the walkthrough of the facility, Engr. Femi Akintunde, Group Managing Director, Alpha Mead Group – the parented company of AMHS, disclosed how the company came by the exciting innovation and its benefits.

He explained that Alpha Mead was inspired by the need to take quality healthcare facilities to all Nigerians and reduce the construction timeline of a healthcare facility to less than 30 days – saving the time lost to design, construction, equipment installation and commissioning of regular brick and mortar healthcare facilities.

Akintunde further explained that the MHF is not a replacement for hospitals but designed to complement gaps in healthcare, especially leverage it mobility feature.

The GMD, who thanked the State Government for allowing the company to set up the facility at the Gbagada General Hospital, further disclosed that the MHF leverages technology to connect patients with medical doctors anywhere through its telemedicine facilities.

On his part, Kunle Omidiora, Managing Director, of AMHS said the product is coming to bridge the widening gap in access to quality healthcare in Nigeria.

He commented: “from whatever lens one chooses to view the challenges with the healthcare sector in Nigeria today; whether financial, personnel, equipment, systems or technologies; the biggest challenge with Nigeria’s healthcare sector is that of access to quality healthcare”.

“This challenge is costing our nation a great deal. For example, a USAID report noted that Nigeria shoulders up to 10% of the global disease burden. The report noted further that this situation is caused by lack of access to quality healthcare facilities and workers, particularly in the rural areas”.

He furthered that challenge can be put in context when squared against 2019 data from Nigeria Health Facility Register (NHFR).

“According to the report, Nigeria has 40,345 registered hospitals and clinics to serve the 201 million population. This simply implies that one healthcare facility is responsible for an estimated five million Nigerians”, Omidiora explained.

He added that the MHF is equipped with a Radiology Information System, Picture Archiving Communication System (RISPACS), Enterprise Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and Telehealth infrastructure for real-time reporting of investigation and remote consultation.

Kano State Leaves No Stone Unturned, Strengthens Immunization In High Risk Communities

0

“For a long time, I was skeptical about vaccinating my children against polio, but now I know better after one of my children work up one morning with weakness of his limbs due to polio says Baba Ali, a resident of Dawakin Kudu LGA in Kano State

“I thank God that my three-year-old son is now regaining the use of his legs. I will henceforth not only allow my children to be vaccinated but will champion the drive to vaccinate other children in my village. I have learnt that there are a couple of families in Wangara that do not allow their kids to receive routine immunization. I hope my case will serve as an eye-opener to them before it is too late” he said.

Just like Mr Ali, Hajiya Sa’a, grandmother of Tanimu the 23 months old boy paralyzed in Tambutu settlement of Jido ward in Dawakin Kudu LGA, Kano State said although her grandson started receiving the routine vaccination, his parent did not comply with the routine immunization calendar and the child did not complete his vaccination doses.

“I have seen the consequences of that. This will not repeat itself in my family. I am now more enlightened, and I urge all and sundry to follow the vaccination schedule religiously” said Hajiya Sa’a,.

Although Nigeria has successfully eradicated the wild poliovirus in the country, there have been recent reports of the circulating Vaccine Derived Poliovirus (cVDPV2) in 18 states, including Kano where four children were already confirmed paralyzed of the disease.

In an effort to curtail the spread of cVDPV2 outbreak in Kano State, the World Health Organization (WHO) supported the state government to plan and conduct mass vaccination exercise with the novel Oral Polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2). The Outbreak Response (OBR) campaign was synchronized with four neighboring states that were also affected. A total of 3,297,347 children aged 0-59 months, representing 99% of the targeted children in Kano State, were vaccinated at the end of the exercise on 4th August 2021.

Providing political oversight

The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Dr Nasir Yusuf Gawuna during the flag-off of the campaign re-affirmed the state government’s commitment to eradicate all forms of polio by investing in various interventions and provision of the necessary funds to fight the disease.

He added, “We will do all that need to be done to ensure no child will ever be paralyzed by the virus in the state”.

He also acknowledged the support of development partners, adding, “We are also grateful to the Federal Government, agencies and international organizations for their cooperation in implementing various projects in this state, such as WHO, UNICEF, Bill & Melinda Foundation, and Dangote Foundation, CHAI, CORE GROUP, Rotary International, FCDO-Health, MSF, MSH and others.”

The cVDPV2 circulates in areas with low population immunity.  The first confirmed case of cVDPV2 in 2021 in Kano was a 63-month old boy from Albasu LGA with date of onset of paralysis on the 21st April 2021. Since then, three additional children were reported, while five viruses were confirmed from environmental samples.

WHO’s support for quality response

Speaking during at the flag-off, the WHO State Coordinator Dr Bashir Abba emphasized the close collaboration with the state government and highlighted that WHO supported in capacity-building activities, microplanning, risk communication & community engagement as well as monitoring and supervision of the campaign.

“WHO also supports surveillance for polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases, including transportation of samples to the accredited laboratories for testing”, he added.

With increase in the number of cVDPV2 cases recorded in the state, the capacity of 112 Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers (DSNOs) and their assistants (ADSNOs) was further enhanced with the support of WHO to detect early and report cases.

To build the capacity of the media on issues surrounding cVDPV2 outbreaks, routine immunization and improving community awareness on the OBR campaign, WHO sensitized 25 journalists from both print and electronic media houses.

In the same vein, WHO supported the training and sensitization of 44 LGA

Involvement of the traditional leaders

In Kano, traditional leaders are the custodians of the culture. During the flag-off, the Emir of Gaya represented by Madakin Gaya and Sarkin Yakin Kano, a veteran member of the northern traditional council on PHC, re-affirmed the community leaders’ commitment towards ensuring all eligible children are vaccinated.

“We showed the way in the days of paralysis due to wild poliovirus, we will show the way again now to stop this outbreak by ensuring all eligible children receive both routine immunization and campaign OPV doses”.

Also speaking on the response activities, the ward head of Dawakiji in Dawakin Kudu LGA, Alhaji Isa Mohammed expressed his delight with the swift response by WHO in promptly investigating the outbreak and building capacity of health workers as well for swift response.

“The health of my people is of utmost importance to me. The WHO has proved to be efficient health leader with this swift response.”

The WHO works with other partners in the Emergency Operation Center including UNICEF, CDC/AFENET, Rotary and Core Group partners project among others, in developing the state plan, conducting outbreak investigation and implementing response activities.

Abia State Vaccinates Over One Million Children During Second Round Of Outbreak Response

0
Abia State located in the southeast geopolitical zone has vaccinated over one million children with the novel oral polio vaccine 2 (nOPV2) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners during the second outbreak vaccination response campaign.
During the 6-day exercise (31 July-04 August), 1,077, 562 children were vaccinated in 10,934 communities from 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
“I decided to present my seven months old baby to be vaccinated because I am convinced that the vaccine prevents polio virus from affecting my child”, says 37-year-old Mrs Nnorom Onyinyechi, whose son is within the targeted age group of 0-5 years.
“I am very happy that my child received the vaccine. There has been no side effect. I have been advising my friends and families with children within the age group to take them to the nearest health facilities to be vaccinated also”, she added.
While Nigeria and the entire WHO African Region got wild poliovirus-free certification in August 2020 by the African Regional Certification Commission, it remains affected by circulating Vaccine Derived Poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) outbreaks.
It is on record that Abia state interrupted WPV in August 2009; the last case being an 18 months’ girl from Isialangwa South LGA of the state. Since then, the state has been free of WPV as well as other polio variants until April 2021 when the presence of cVDPV2 was confirmed in an environmental sample collected from the Ogbor Hill site, Aba North LGA situated within an international market.
In order to muster a strong and quality vaccination response, WHO supported the state government to conduct a well-planned flag-off to kick start the second-round outbreak response vaccination on 30th July 2021.
In his remarks at the ceremony, the Deputy Governor, Ude Oko Chukwu, said, “The situation where children less than 5 years are infected with a poliovirus is unacceptable.” He further stated that “Abia State government is committed to ensuring that all children less than 5 years in the state are reached and vaccinated against polio no matter the cost.”
The detection of cVDPV2 anywhere underscores the importance of maintaining high levels of polio vaccination coverage at all levels, to minimize the risk and consequences of any poliovirus circulation.
Meanwhile, WHO State Coordinator (SC), Dr Linus Okoro said with this new wave of support, WHO will continue to support the government of Abia to build on the successes of the polio eradication initiative and strengthen routine immunization.
According to the SC, other “Outbreak response activities started in the affected areas of Abia after the cVDPV2 was confirmed in the environment in order to boost population immunity and interrupt transmission of the virus. Active search for any additional cases continues, as well as additional surveillance measures such as an increase in sewage sample collection frequency and systematic sampling of healthy children.”
For the records, no case of wild polio have been discovered in Nigeria at this time, and the country had not seen any cases since August 2016; leading to the declaration of Nigeria’s wild polio-free status and certification of Africa as wild polio-free in 2020.
Support for polio  immunization to the Government of Nigeria through WHO is made possible by funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation,
