U.S. Army Special Forces Conclude Training with Nigeria Navy Special Boat Service

July 13, 2021 – On Thursday, 25 officers of the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Service completed a five-week Joint Combined Exchange Training (JCET) alongside a team of U.S. Army Special Forces.

Throughout the JCET, the American military trainers and the Nigerian Navy special operations forces trained together on a broad range of land-based skills and tactics, such as countering improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

The exercise is part of a series of U.S. engagements with the Nigerian military that provides opportunities for the Nigerian military and U.S. elite units to work together, learn from each other, and strengthen relationships.

Delivering remarks during the JCET closing ceremony in Lagos, Acting U.S. Consulate Political and Economic Chief Merrica Heaton noted that the U.S. government works closely with all the services of the Nigerian military to provide technical assistance, equipment, and professional exchange and training opportunities.

According to her, the JCET is part of a close and continuous military partnership between the United States and Nigeria spanning decades to strengthen defence ties and promote regional security.

“The United States Mission to Nigeria is a steadfast partner — helping combat maritime crime in the Gulf of Guinea, counter violent extremists in the Northeast, and enforce the rule of law throughout the region,” Heaton said.

The magnitude of this summer’s engagements demonstrates the strategic importance of the United States-Nigeria bilateral relationship: the U.S. is delivering A-29 SUPER TUCANOs as part of the largest defence sale to an African country; the United States Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps are scheduled for extensive programs in Nigeria beyond pre-COVID levels. These engagements build on a longstanding security partnership, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea.

Nigeria participates in multiple bilateral and multilateral military exercises with the United States, including African Lion, Flintlock, and Obangame Express.

The U.S. and Nigeria cooperate on maritime security, military professionalization including human rights, counterterrorism efforts against Boko Haram and ISIS-West Africa, defence trade, and strengthening governance.

Unilever Partners With Arzeda To Harness Computer-Designed Enzymes

0

Unilever and Arzeda, the industry-leading Protein Design Company™, have entered a strategic partnership to apply the latest advances in digital biology to discovering and designing new enzymes.

The partnership will impact many of the world’s leading cleaning and laundry products, including Unilever’s OMO (Persil), Sunlight, and Surf.

Enzymes are fundamental to the natural and living world around us, responsible for nearly all biological functions that take place on earth, from how plants and trees absorb CO2, to how we convert food to energy in our bodies.

Enzymes have also long been a key ingredient in cleaning and laundry products, breaking down stains made from fat, oils, and protein chains on our laundry and surfaces. To date, science has only scraped the surface of the benefits it could provide in our everyday lives. Unlocking their power could provide almost endless possibilities.

Under the partnership, over the next three years, the global consumer goods company will apply Arzeda’s world-leading digital biology techniques to its own product innovations across its cleaning and laundry portfolio.

Arzeda learns from the vast number of enzymes already in nature and uses smart technologies – a combination of physics-based computational protein design and deep learning, a form of AI – to optimise their functionalities. As well as exploring enzymes occurring naturally in the world, Arzeda is also able to design diverse, new versions with unique benefits that would otherwise not have been possible.

Originally derived from nature, Arzeda optimizes enzymes to replace ingredients with a high environmental footprint commonly found in most cleaning and laundry products. As part of its Clean Future strategy, Unilever has committed to eliminating virgin fossil fuels as a feedstock for the chemicals in its cleaning and laundry product formulations.

Enzymes, which are low carbon, naturally derived, and deliver added performance benefits, will be critical in helping Unilever realize its Clean Future ambition.

The discovery and optimization of new enzymes in formulations could result in up to 50% fewer ingredients required while delivering superior cleaning benefits to the consumer.

An Impact Beyond Our Business

As well as delivering new benefits for the cleaning and laundry sector, this partnership will encourage knowledge-sharing of previously undiscovered uses for enzymes that could solve wider consumer, industrial and environmental challenges across multiple sectors.

Arzeda is working with a number of global players at present to produce future-focused solutions to large societal and everyday problems, from the production of renewable chemicals to self-healing phone screens.

Peter ter Kulve, Unilever Home Care President said, “This partnership is an exciting step forward as we work to transform our cleaning and laundry business to be superior, sustainable and affordable to all. We look forward to working with Arzeda in developing a new generation of ultra-performing cleaning and laundry products with an environmental impact a fraction of the size of current products.”

Alexandre Zanghellini, CEO and founder of Arzeda said, “We are delighted to work with Unilever to support their Clean Future ambition with enzymes that improve the environmental footprint of consumer products.

Arzeda’s mission is to design and manufacture new proteins that improve health and sustainability, and we see this partnership as a key milestone to make this a reality in-home care.

Working with Unilever, we hope to create a new era for industrial enzymes that will contribute to a more sustainable world while improving the consumer experience.”

University of Oxford and FMDQ Group Launch Pioneer Global Partnership

Nigeria has one of the largest numbers of technology start-ups in Africa and has been identified as one of the eleven ‘3G’ countries by Citigroup – countries of large growth potential and profitable investment opportunities.

Currently, over 80% of venture/start-up funding comes from an entrepreneur’s personal or family resources.

Through this partnership between Oxford Foundry and FMDQ Private Markets – the largest private capital platform in Nigeria, – a bespoke Programme, starting in late 2021, leveraging the University of Oxford’s global, multidisciplinary networks and Nigeria’s entrepreneurship ecosystem, to support Nigeria’s future business leaders and high-growth start-ups to access the networks, skills and investment pathways they need to grow their businesses, has been co-created.

The Programme is focused on three (3) key areas, to Upskill, Grow and Acceleratewith the facilitation of the training of twenty (20) young Nigerian aspiring entrepreneurs and future leaders through the OXFO-FMDQ Young Entrepreneurial Leaders programme; the promotion of knowledge exchange and sharing best practice across Oxford’s and Nigeria’s angel investment communities, through roundtables and relationship building initiatives, to unlock vital capital; and the acceleration of five (5) high-potential Nigerian start-ups through a tailor-made OXFO x FMDQ Start-up Bootcamp, to scale up transformative social and economic impact in Nigeria.

The Programme leverages the Oxford Foundry’s unparalleled assets, including networks, partnerships and a venture building and leadership curriculum delivered by some of the world’s leading experts.

According to Ana Bakshi, Director of the Oxford Foundry,

“I am sincerely pleased to launch our first global partnership with FMDQ in Nigeria. Nigeria has one of the largest numbers of tech start-ups in Africa, and Africa is a continent of immense entrepreneurial talent and high-growth venture potential.

There is a huge opportunity to invest in the future generation of global entrepreneurs and leaders who will come from across the continent, and this first partnership is an important step to build new relationships and learn from other entrepreneurial ecosystems.

Now more than ever, it’s vital that we share our resources, access to networks and opportunities, and work together across geographical boundaries to benefit society, create jobs and boost economies. We want to open the Oxford Foundry up to the world, and together, support the next generation of entrepreneurs and leaders to create the purpose-led impact and positive change we all need to see.”

Bola Onadele. Koko, Chief Executive Officer of FMDQ Group, stated that,

“FMDQ is delighted to be the first global partner of the Oxford Foundry, particularly on this laudable initiative, which emphasises the provision of critical support for high-growth start-up businesses.

It is vital that young Nigerian start-up companies and high-growth small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are provided with the skills, networks, mentorship and capital required to overcome the barriers to successfully grow and sustain their businesses, thereby creating employment opportunities and supporting poverty alleviation in the country.

FMDQ Group, through its wholly-owned subsidiary, FMDQ Private Markets, is excited to work with a credible partner to deliver the key programmes under the partnership to develop and transform Nigeria’s young entrepreneurs, further entrenching the ethos of the Group’s mission – we collaborate to empower markets for economic progress towards delivering prosperity.

Furthermore, this Programme is in close alignment with FMDQ Private Market’s flagship initiative – SCALE (Start-up Capital Access & Liquidity Ecosystem) – aimed at supporting the growth of highpotential Nigerian-based start-up companies, creating a pipeline of sustainable businesses in Nigeria.”

The Oxford Foundry Entrepreneurship Centre at the University of Oxford was opened by the CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, in 2017, to provide all students and alumni of the University of Oxford, as well as wider communities, the entrepreneurial and technology experiential skills and training they need to succeed in their chosen careers, and to build and lead purposeful, sustainable ventures that benefit people and the planet.

Through local, national, and international partnerships, the Foundry is democratising entrepreneurship and opening up Oxford University’s talent, resources and networks to the world.

To date, the 32 ventures on the Foundry’s Accelerator Programme, Elevate, have raised over £43 million since joining the Programme, are valued at over £150m, have created more than 170 jobs globally, and are creating a positive impact around the world across different sectors and industries.

Senate Set To Ban JAMB From Admitting Below 18 Years

The Nigerian Senate is set to ban JAMB from admitting candidates below 18 years of age.

According to reports, the Senate Committee on Basic Education led by Senator Akon Eyakenyi said they are working towards amending the law establishing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to stop the board from admitting candidates below the age of 18 years.

According to the committee, age has a lot to do with learning ability, particularly in higher institutions.

Senator Akon Eyakenyi noted that education is very important in the development of the country stressing that the sector deserves to be given much attention.

The Senator described the JAMB as a bridge between the secondary and the university, stressing that the agency was a necessary vehicle for the delivery of quality and standard education in Nigeria.

“If the products from the secondary schools are not properly catered for to be assessed before turning them into the university definitely you will have a problem,” she said.

Predator Energy Drink: NBC, Rite Foods Suit Resumes September 22

0

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday, July 12, adjourned till September 22, proceedings in the suit between Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) Ltd and Rite Foods Ltd.

In the suit, marked FHC/L/CS/92/2021, both firms are locked in a battle over alleged similarities or not between the logos of their energy drinks.

Rite Foods had instituted a legal action against NBC on February 9, 2021, asking for an order of the court to restrain NBC from further promoting its Predator Energy drink in the Nigerian market.

It claimed through its counsel Mr. Muyiwa Ogungbenro, that Predator’s lion insignia bears a striking resemblance to the Fearless.

NBC, Rite Foods Suit Resumes September 22

But NBC denied any claim of trademark violation or passing off with its Predator Energy drink vowing to contest the case vigorously in court.

It has also prayed the court to set aside an ex-parte injunction obtained by Rite Foods Ltd against the continued promotion the Predator Energy drink in the Nigerian market.

It further asked the court to dismiss Rite Foods’ committal application brought against NBC’s Managing Director, Mr. Matthieu Seguin, for alleged disobedience to the interim order.

The suit, formerly before Justice Chukwujeku Aneke, is now before Justice Lewis Allagoa.

NBC’s counsel Mr. Mark Mordi had told Justice Aneke that Rite Foods’ applications were brought malafide and were without merit as the suit lacked a firm ground to stand in law.

He contended that the Predator logo had been in existence and in use in many markets outside of Nigeria even prior to the launch of Fearless by Rite Foods in the Nigerian market.

When the matter came up before Justice Allagoa, he fixed the September 22 date for the hearing of preliminary applications in the suit.
