Finland Leads for the Second Year Globally in Providing Future-skills Education for Youth, According to the 2019 Worldwide Educating for the Future Index (WEFFI)

0

  • Finland’s universal future skills strength across all index
pillars including policy and teaching environment and access to technology see
it retain its lead among 50 economies in the third edition of the Worldwide Educating for the Future
    Index (WEFFI)
, produced by The Economist Intelligence Unit and commissioned
    by the Yidan Prize Foundation
  • Sweden and New Zealand ranked second and third, with Sweden
advancing two places and New Zealand maintaining its third position from 2018’s
    results
  • The Philippines, Ghana and Mexico all performed strongly
among a new income-adjusted ranking due to their ability to channel their more
limited resources to implement strong policy and advance a future skills agenda
  • Among the world’s largest economies, the US, UK,
France and Russia all fell in their rankings while China, India and Indonesia
    advanced their scores

Consensus on the need to adopt future-focused
approaches to education has grown in countries globally but implementation of
policy to make such changes remains the largest challenge to preparing students
for the challenges that await them in work and society according to a new
report released today by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

Themed “From Policy to Practice”,
the white paper is commissioned by the Yidan Prize Foundation and based on the
findings of the third annual Worldwide Educating for the Future Index. With a
focus on young people aged 15-24 in 50 economies, it measures three pillars of
education systems–policy approaches, teaching conditions and broader gauges of
societal freedom and openness–as a means of readying young people to meet the
challenges of work and society in future. It remains the only major ranking to
assess inputs to education systems and stands in contrast to measures like the
OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment, which looks at exam-like
outputs.

The report shows that the need to
develop future skills like critical thinking, creativity, entrepreneurship and
analysis is more vital than ever given the continuing advances in technology
and artificial intelligence. A number of countries, including Finland, Sweden
and New Zealand, are embracing this education challenge through comprehensive
policies, well-trained teachers and strong assessment frameworks to test for
future skills. A new income adjusted ranking also showed that many lower-income
countries, including the Philippines, Ghana, Mexico and Vietnam, are also
performing well with particular strengths in their policy and teaching
environments.

Among developed countries, the UK
and the US demonstrated notable ranking declines, falling from 10th
and 18th respectively in 2018 to 15th and 22nd in
2019. With Brexit coming to dominate the political agenda in the UK and a
decentralised education system weakening national policy objectives in the US,
inattention to education is beginning to have a significant impact, as
reflected in falls in the education policy environment in these countries.

“The third edition of the index
shows that while more economies have incorporated the future skills agenda into
their education policies over the past two years, policy implementation still
remains weak in many nations,” Georgia McCafferty, editor of the report said. “Progress
in adapting assessment frameworks, quality assurance frameworks and teacher
training all need to accelerate.”

“The recent rise of nativism and
populism in some quarters of the world, along with a rejection of
globalisation, makes the need for students develop future-oriented skills like
critical thinking and analysis even more urgent in order for them to combat
these forces,” she added.

More
details and an executive summary of the report are available here.

Note to editors:

The
Worldwide
Educating for the Future Index 2019

assesses the extent to which education systems are equipping youth aged 15-24
with the skills needed in future. It covers 50 economies representing 93% of
global GDP, 88% of the global population and 81% of the global youth population.
The economies were selected for balance across multiple factors, including
income levels, population size, youth populations and geographic representation.
The index includes 20 indicators and 57 sub-indicators across three thematic
categories: policy environment, teaching environment and socio-economic
environment. A full explanation of the methodology can be found in the appendix
of the report.

Aruba Delivers Industry’s First End-to-End, Services-Rich Switching Portfolio Spanning Enterprise Campus, Branch and Data Center

0

New CX Series Switches with Cloud-Native Operating System Integrate Closed-Loop Automation and Analytics to Simplify the Operator Experience

HONG KONG, CHINA – Media OutReach – January 14, 2020 – Aruba, a Hewlett
Packard Enterprise company (NYSE: HPE), today announced that it is changing
the rules of networking
with the introduction of switching and software innovations
designed to address the unique needs of today’s modern enterprise campus,
branch and data center. The Aruba
CX Switching Portfolio
now includes the Aruba CX 6300 Series fixed configuration and CX 6400
Series modular access, aggregation and core switches, while delivering the
latest advancements in the AOS-CX operating system. This gives network
operators one simple, end-to-end switching platform to dramatically improve
business outcomes today and into the future.

Aruba is the first company
to offer a single switching platform that runs on a modern network operating
system — AOS-CX — from the enterprise edge to the core
to the data center. This unique, cloud-native platform is further optimized by
Aruba’s powerful Network
Analytics Engine (NAE)
, which utilizes embedded analytics and automation to simplify
management, accelerate troubleshooting of application performance issues and
remediate common network problems.

Gartner states, “As update
speed increases, it is no longer viable to manually plan for and deploy tens,
hundreds or thousands of network changes each time an application change
occurs. Making these changes manually is not only impractical, but is likely to
result in significant errors.”[i]
Manual processes can significantly hinder an organization’s ability to move
quickly, innovate and thrive in a competitive marketplace. Moreover, many of
these hurdles can be overcome with a cloud-native infrastructure. According to
Gartner, a “cloud-native infrastructure exhibits the following characteristics:

  •  Modularity – It provides abstractions for independent
packaging of services (such as containers or serverless functions).
  • Programmability – It supports provisioning and management
    via declarative APIs and policies.
  • Elasticity – Resources can be scaled up and down
dynamically in an automated and policy-driven manner using orchestrators.
  • Resiliency – Services are loosely coupled units that
    are independent and fault-tolerant.[ii]

One
OS. One ASIC Architecture. One Operating Model.

Stemming from the
breakthrough innovation and success of its CX 8400 Series core switches running the AOS-CX operating
system — as evidenced by significant
momentum with winning new core customers
— Aruba is addressing these challenges with a
modern switching portfolio that delivers a single operating model from the
enterprise campus and branch access layer to the data center, greatly
simplifying network operations. The new platforms in the Aruba CX Switching Portfolio incorporate the
key elements of a modern networking infrastructure and include:

  • Aruba CX 6300 and CX 6400 Series switches featuring
    Aruba’s 7th Generation ASIC architecture
: The Aruba CX 6300 Series is a family of stackable switches
that offers flexible growth via a 10-member virtual switching framework (VSF) and
provides built-in 10/25/50 gigabit uplinks to meet the bandwidth needs of today
and the future. The Aruba CX 6400 Series modular switches offer both
    a 5-slot chassis and a
10-slot chassis with a non-blocking fabric that scales from Gigabit POE access
to 100G core, allowing customers to standardize on one platform across the
    enterprise, including hybrid use cases.
  • AOS-CX 10.4: The new version
of AOS-CX introduces rich access features to the OS while extending CX
differentiators to the access layer of the network. These include Aruba Dynamic Segmentation to provide secure,
unified policy across wired and wireless down to every user and IoT device,
Ethernet VPN (EVPN) over VxLAN for simplified and secure connectivity from enterprises
to data centers, and Virtual Switching Extension (VSX) live upgrades for no
    downtime during maintenance cycles.
  • Aruba NetEdit 2.0 with Network Analytics Engine
    (NAE)
: The significantly enhanced version of Aruba’s NetEdit software now
integrates with Aruba’s NAE. This advancement enables centralized
visualization of network health leveraging NAE distributed analytics across
every switch in the network to reduce troubleshooting cycles from days to
minutes. New automation capabilities simplify common tasks such as implementing
configuration changes or initial system set-up which can now be completed via
    the CX Mobile app.

“AI-powered automation must
be at the heart of a modern, edge-to-cloud architecture,” said Kenneth Ma, director and general manager of Hong Kong and Macau at
Aruba, a Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Company
. “We believe that AI is the key to analyzing data,
providing actionable insights, and automation at scale to optimize network
operators’ ability to quickly troubleshoot, remediate and proactively resolve
some of IT’s most pressing challenges. We are thrilled to introduce this
valuable new solution to enterprise customers across Hong Kong and Macau. This
innovative solution will help customer focus on their business mission and
avoid wasting time on their bottlenecks.”

Supporting Quotes

“The new Aruba CX Switching Portfolio comes
to market as demands on the enterprise network continue to increase, with more
users, devices and things requiring higher speeds and lower latencies.
Enterprises are looking for powerful platforms with simplified operations to
keep up with the current and future needs of the business. Aruba’s CX switching
portfolio allows customers to use a single platform for Ethernet switching from
the datacenter to the access layer, providing a consistent, cloud-native OS,
helping enterprises achieve easier management, more consistent operator
experience and higher levels of quality assurance.”

Brandon
Butler, senior research analyst, Network Infrastructure at IDC

“I believe Aruba’s new CX
switching portfolio holds tremendous promise, especially for modern healthcare
organizations where so many aspects of improving patient care involve the
network, such as connected medical devices and transmission of electronic
patient data. Seattle Children’s selected Aruba technology for its research
facility, Building Cure, based on the AOS-CX operating system and its ability
to deliver non-stop networking that’s future-proof.”

Dr. Zafar Chaudry, senior
vice president and chief information officer at Seattle Children’s

FG Bans Banky W’s New Movie, “Sugar Rush” From Cinemas

The National Film and Video Censors Board has ordered cinemas nationwide to stop showing a recently released movie, Sugar Rush.

The NVFCB, Executive Director, Adedayo Thomas, however, told our reporter that the movie was not suspended because of some scenes found to portray the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as an incompetent organisation.

The film, which has grossed about N160m since its release on December 25, 2019, was directed by Kayode Kasum and largely publicised by singer Bankole Wellington aka Banky W and wife, Adesua.

The movie was, however, removed from cinemas by the NFVCB, the Federal Government agency responsible for classifying movies and giving approval for release.

The film centres on three sisters who accidentally discover $800,000 (N288m) in the house of a corrupt man.

According to some online critics, the comedy-drama also showed failed attempts by the EFCC to recover the money, depicting the EFCC operatives as incompetent and clumsy.

Several online reports suggest that the poor portrayal of the EFCC in the comedy was one of the reasons it was pulled out of cinemas.

Confirming the suspension of the movie, Banky W said he was optimistic that it would return to theatres.

He wrote on Twitter, “Thank you all so much for the support that our film Sugar Rush has received. Unfortunately, due to issues that are way beyond our control, Sugar Rush has been suspended from playing in cinemas.

“We’re hoping the issues will be resolved quickly, so we can resume screening as soon as possible.”

In a subsequent tweet, the musician said the NFVCB was already looking to resolve it.

“If you saw Sugar Rush movie and loved it, or if you planned to, please read our statements. We are very hopeful and optimistic that the film will be back on screens in a few days, so please don’t give up on us, and please stay optimistic with us.

“Your love and support mean the world to us. Thank you to NFVCB for helping us rectify any issues. Please stay tuned, by God’s grace you will see our film again very soon. Please stay positive people!! Love you all,” he said.

The Executive Director of the NFVCB, however, told our reporter during an interview that the movie was not suspended because of pressure from the EFCC.

Thomas said the agency was not political.

He explained that Sugar Rush did not have full approval before hitting the cinemas.

The NFVCB boss said the movie was given a temporary approval pending the classification and final approval of the movie, adding that period within which the temporary approval could be used had lapsed.

Thomas said he had met with the producers of the movie and he was hopeful that things would be resolved soon.

He added, “The movie was given temporary approval in December. They had told us that they wanted to release it on Christmas Day and they were thus given a temporary approval pending the approval of a permanent one.

“The temporary one lapsed before they could complete the process of getting the permanent one.

“The matter has nothing to do with the EFCC as is being reported on social media.”

Have You Engaged Your Boss For 2020?

Most employees have expectations that are hardly ever communicated with their superiors.

This silence is often as a result of doubts that the Boss might not take your conversation seriously, and even if he does, there will be no actions and ultimately no results. Then we also have the Bosses who are just unapproachable.

Last year, I engaged my Boss on my expectations for 2020. We both had an interesting discussion on different areas in line with the team and of course my role. There were areas we obviously had different opinions on. And that was fine. We just looked at a common ground and how the Department was going to benefit from it.

I would like to share a few tips, you will find them useful as you prepare to engage your Boss this new year 2020.

  1. Note down in a diary or jotter, all the areas you want to discuss.

This is so that you don’t forget any of the areas you would like to discuss when you eventually meet with your Boss. If your Boss is as busy as a bee, you know you will need to make good use of the time. So put your pen on paper. I had like 6 areas I wanted to cover. If I hadn’t written them down, it’s very possible to have forgotten an important area during our meeting. Your meeting though scheduled may actually happen impromptu, so when you have your points well noted. All you have to do is flip to the right page and you are good to go.

  1. Schedule A Meeting.

This can be done in person, via phone calls, via mail and followed up verbally to know the appropriate time that will work for you both.

  1. Be Flexible

It’s possible that your meeting may take some time to hold as scheduled due to many workplace reasons. Be flexible and consistent, don’t be discouraged. Keep your follow-up game on! It is also possible that it may not hold in the venue you planned it would. Keep your eye on your objectives.

  1. In this meeting, you don’t have to have all the answers, neither does your boss.

This meeting should be a conversation or at least a dialogue between you and your line head. Not a war zone. You don’ need to have answers to all your expectations, neither does your Boss. Note the action points and assign them in a jotter as the conversation unfolds. This meeting is not for the throwing of accusations but for sharing ideas that will benefit you and ultimately the business. You can share a minute of your meeting, so as to clarify action points and areas you have concluded on.

  1. How will the business benefit from your expectations

Have this in mind as you prepare to communicate your expectations. Remember, every organisation is alive to make a profit.
