Airtel Africa Q2 revenue grows 9.8% to $844M, driven by double-digit growth in Nigeria and East Africa

0

Airtel Africa on Friday reported a 78% jump in net profit to $96 million for the second quarter ended on 30 September 2019, driven by growth in customer base.

The company had recorded a net profit of $54 million in the same period a year ago.

The Africa unit, which crossed the 100 million customer mark in July, said its revenue growth of 10 per cent in reported currency was driven by double-digit growth in Nigeria and East Africa, partially offset by a slight decrease in Rest of Africa.

In constant currency terms, revenue grew 11.4% in H1 and 12.6% in Q2. This was the 7th consecutive quarter of double-digit constant currency growth. The constant currency revenue growth of 11.4% was driven by double-digit growth in Nigeria and East Africa, partially offset by a slight decrease in Rest of Africa. Growth was broad-based across all services, with revenue in Voice, Data and Mobile Money up by 3.2%, 37.8% and 46.5% respectively

“These figures underline the strength of our ability to consistently deliver growth across voice, data and mobile money. In the first 6 months of this financial year, we delivered revenue growth of 11.4 per cent in constant currency terms, with even higher underlying EBITDA growth as we continued to improve our operating leverage and tight focus on costs,” said Raghunath Mandava, Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Africa.

The average revenue per user almost remained flat at $2.8 in the second quarter. However, it grew by 2.4 percent on a constant currency basis.

The total customer base of Airtel Africa grew by 10.4 percent to 103.9 million from 94.1 million during the period under review. Data users on the company’s network grew by 17.7 percent to 31.9 million in July-September 2019 from 27.1 million a year ago.

“This performance underlines our ability to consistently grow in double digits, powered by our growth engines of data and Airtel Money growing at 37 percent and 46 percent respectively. This is the 7th quarter of double-digit growth with EBITDA margin expansion of over 90 basis points,” Mandava said.

The net debt on the company almost halved to $3,191 million at the end of 30 September 2019, from $6,439 million a year ago.

“The reduction in net debt is a result of bond repayments of $2.2 billion and an increase in cash from the net IPO proceeds of $670 million. As a result, leverage reduced to 2.3 times as of September 2019 as compared to 5.1 times as of September 2018 basis last twelve month EBITDA,” the company said.

Airtel Africa’s data revenue was up 39 per cent at $229 million on-year and was the largest contributor to growth owing to an increasing number of customers taking to high-speed LTE services, resulting in a 57 per cent growth in data usage. Data average revenue per user rose to 2.5$ up 20 per cent in constant currency terms for the September ended the quarter, on-year.

Voice revenue in constant currency grew by 3.3 per cent to $491 million largely driven by customer growth driven by stable churn and expansion of distribution infrastructure. Voice Apru however declined by 6 per cent on-year to $1.6 in the quarter due to weakness in Rest of Africa and decrease in interconnect rates across key markets, especially in East Africa which more than offset ARPU growth in Nigeria.

Three Crowns Flags off Mum of the Year 2019 Campaign, Set to Sponsor 3 Winners to Dubai

Three Crowns Milk, Nigeria’s dairy brand and product from the stable of FrieslandCampina WAMCO, has commenced its search for 2019 Mum of the Year. This year’s edition, just like last year, will crown three Nigerian mothers as winners of the competition and reward them with an all-expense-paid trip to Dubai.

According to the Marketing Manager, Three Crowns Milk, Omolara Banjoko, Three Crowns Milk Mum of the Year campaign has come to be recognized as the leading campaign dedicated to celebrating Nigerian mothers.

She confirmed to journalists in Lagos that the competition was designed to put the spotlight on mothers by recognizing the unique role they play in ensuring healthy nutrition for the family.

“As a brand, Three Crowns Milk cares for mothers’ hearts so that they can in turn care for their families. This is the essence of Mum of the Year campaign. One of the key things that we have identified is that the foundation of any family and heart of every home is the mother and for her to be a solid foundation, she needs to stay fit and healthy which is what Three Crowns Milk helps her achieve. We strongly believe that if the pillar of the house, the mother is healthy, the whole family would be happy” Banjoko said.

The three winners of Three Crowns Mum of the Year competition will be rewarded with an all-expense-paid trip for themselves and three members of their families to Dubai plus one year’s supply of Three Crowns Milk, while others would win consolation prizes, including kitchen makeover and a range of Three Crowns Milk products.

Three Crowns Mum of the Year campaign debuted in 2015 when Olamide Olaleye emerged winner, followed by Nkechi Brayila who won in 2016, while Oluwakemi Longe was crowned Mum of the Year in 2017.

In 2018 and in commemoration of its 30 years anniversary, Three Crowns raised the stake of the competition by awarding the grand prize to three winners; Jennifer OtoGod, Pauline Pambolo Daniel and Adaobi Okonkwo. They were each rewarded with an all-expense paid a vacation to Dubai with 2 members of their families and a year’s supply of Three Crowns Milk.

Banjoko announced that this year, family and friends only need to follow three simple steps: “BUY, WRITE and SUBMIT” to participate in the competition.

“Interested participants are expected to buy a range of Three Crowns Milk products; either two units of 350g refill pouch, six units of Evap 160g or two rolls of 12g sachet. They are then to write a short story on why their mum is the best and deserves a grand holiday.

“The story writes up, names, pictures of nominated mums alongside empty packs of the Three Crowns Milk products will then be submitted to the brand website https://www.femininelounge.com/threecrownscompetition or on WhatsApp 08036847790 or in selected stores” Banjoko explained.

She said that nominations could be made in person or through friends and family, adding that the more you buy and submit, the better your chances of being shortlisted to win.

All entries received would be screened while shortlisted contestants would be invited for the grand finale for a competition to determine the winners of the 2019 competition. The judges for this year’s edition of the grand finale include top Nigerian celebrities and popular fitness coaches.

Since 1988, Three Crowns Milk has nourished consumers in ways that promote healthy eating habits and active lifestyles so that mothers and their families remain healthy.

As the heart-friendly milk, Three Crowns Milk is the only Nigerian dairy brand endorsed by the Nigerian Heart Foundation as it continues to celebrate every mum as the heart of the home.

World Bank Doing Business Index: President Buhari Delighted As Nigeria Moves Up 15 Places To 131 From 146

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed delight with the World Bank’s 2020 Doing Business Index (DBI) which ranked Nigeria 131 out of 190 countries, up 15 places from 146th position last year.

The report, which was released Thursday, also named Nigeria one of the top 10 most improved economies in the world for the second time in three years.

Nigeria is one of only two African countries to make this highly prestigious list. With this year’s leap, Nigeria has improved an aggregate of 39 places in the World Bank Doing Business index since 2016.

The Doing Business Index is an annual ranking that objectively assesses prevailing business climate conditions across 190 countries based on 10 ease of doing business indicators.

The index captures the ease of doing business reforms that have been validated by the private sector and offers comparative insights based on private sector validation in the two largest commercial cities in countries with a population higher than 100 million. The report consequently features Lagos and Kano for Nigeria.

Welcoming the announcement, President Buhari noted that “the movement of 15 places to 131 as well as the recognition being given to Nigeria as one of the top 10 most improved countries, that have implemented the most reforms this year, is significant because we were not even able to achieve some of the key reforms we had pursued, but what we have done so far is being recognized.

This validation confirms that our strategy is working and we will continue to push even harder to deliver more impactful reforms.”

With the impending ratification of the Companies and Allied Matters Bill and the introduction of the Business Facilitation (Omnibus) Bill, 2019 in view, along with other pending and ongoing regulatory, judicial and sub-national reforms, the President declared that “the announcement by the World Bank indicates that our mandate to move into the top 70 doing business destinations by 2023 remains achievable.”

Briefing President Buhari on the rankings, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment and Vice-Chair of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC), Otunba Niyi Adebayo had stated:

“The steady improvement in Nigeria’s ease of doing business score and rank is a testament to the reforms implemented by this Administration over the past four years in line with the reform agenda being implemented at national and sub-national levels across the country since the establishment of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) by President Muhammadu Buhari in July, 2016.

“The PEBEC works towards the fulfillment of the projections of the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP 2017-2020), which is striving to deliver sustainable economic growth in Nigeria by restoring growth, investing in our people, and building a competitive economy as we work towards delivering Mr President’s mandate of bringing 100 million people out of poverty.

The 2020 Doing Business report from the World Bank has reaffirmed the commitment of the newly constituted PEBEC to making Nigeria a progressively easier place to do business and removing the bureaucratic constraints to doing business in the country as we forge ahead in this Next Level.”

The Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council, chaired by His Excellency the Vice President, with 13 ministers as members amongst others, has through the Enabling Business Environment Secretariat collaborated with ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), the National Assembly, the Judiciary, State governments and the private sector to carry out over 140 reforms so far in a bid to remove bureaucratic constraints to doing business in Nigeria and make the country a progressively easier place to start and grow a business. On the new ranking, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, Special Adviser to the President, Ease of Doing Business/Secretary PEBEC, said:

“The private sector remains the fulcrum of the ease of doing business interventions. We are committed to more engagements among reform-implementing organs of government and the private sector players, and we are happy to see that these have resulted in a more favourable validation of the reforms by the private sector.

This result will serve as an encouragement to sustain the deepening of these reforms and make it even more tangible for businesses and the citizenry. The PEBEC is focused on delivering even more substantive reforms for the improvement of the general business climate.”

She noted that over the past four years, Nigeria’s score has steadily improved in the World Bank Doing Business Report, after years of decline in both score and ranking in the years preceding 2016.

She also recalled that in 2017, Nigeria moved up by an unprecedented 24 places on the Doing Business rankings, and was for the first time ever, recognized as one of the top 10 reformers in the area of doing business that year.

Ondo State Govt Partners With German Firm To Build $1.1billion Medical City

0

As part of its commitment to improve the health sector, facilitate modern healthcare in Ondo State and end medical tourism abroad, the administration of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has signed a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Germany-based health institution, Medicus International, to build a USD1.1billion Sunshine medical City in the state.

The Mou was signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde, while the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Medicus International, Frank Spriewald, signed on behalf of the company at the Ondo State Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja, on Thursday, October 24, 2019.

Speaking at the event, Governor Akeredolu said he was more than convinced that Medicus International has good intention to develop the medical infrastructure in the state.

He said: “I am more than convinced that Medicus has good intention. As I told them when they came, coincidentally about a few weeks ago, I was in Germany myself and I saw their structure.

“When I was in Berlin, I was talking to another medical organisation to bring their facility to Ondo State. I was negotiating with them not knowing that someone else was already waiting for this.

“No doubt, we are interested in this. We have made efforts. We are already working on how to secure a land very close to the airport. It is an interesting thing.

“We are prepared to cooperate and we know that this sort of thing is to be done as a joint venture. The interest of Ondo State is there. We are putting land. The joint venture itself will come up.”

Arakunrin Akeredolu also announced that the state government has set up a team led by the Special Adviser on Health to work with the Medicus International.

Earlier, the facilitator for Medicus International, Chief Oludare Bello, said the time for the execution of the project is thirty-six months and development will be completed in forty-eight months.

According to him, the hospital will deal with all facets of healthcare, adding that the nearness to the airport became imperative because the hospital will have its own helicopter that will transverse other parts of the state for medical purposes.

Chief Bello explained that there will be other facilities in the medical city such as conference Center, Cinema, teaching hospital and nursing school.

He said: “The hospital is a city on its own. The design is premised on the fact that there will be green in the whole hospital. That is to make the patients see the ambience of the hospital when they lean over the window to have a view.

“It will be one of its kind in Nigeria. Over 50% of the doctors are already trained in Germany. The doctors that will be employed here will also be trained in Germany.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr Jibayo Adeyeye, said Medicus International is charged with the responsibility of looking for the fund for the project, adding that the State government is only investing 100 hectares of land and with other routine approvals.

He said the MoU is coming after serial of engagements to have a memorandum signed between the state government and the organization.
