Europe has marked a major milestone in its space ambitions as the most powerful version of the Ariane 6 rocket successfully lifted off with 32 satellites for Amazon’s Leo broadband network. The launch took place from Europe’s spaceport in Kourou, signalling the first Ariane 6 mission dedicated to Amazon’s satellite constellation.
The flight represents a significant step for Europe’s space industry as it seeks to strengthen its position in the fast-growing low Earth orbit market, currently dominated by Starlink. Amazon’s Leo project is designed to deliver global broadband coverage, with plans to expand its network to more than 3,000 satellites in the coming years.
Brandspur Brand News understands that this mission used the Ariane 64 configuration, featuring four strap-on boosters to provide additional thrust. The upgraded rocket is capable of carrying more than 21 metric tonnes into low Earth orbit, more than double the capacity of earlier configurations flown during initial missions.
The Ariane 6 programme is backed by 13 member states of the European Space Agency, underscoring its role as a flagship European project. Construction of the rocket involves around 600 subcontractors, coordinated by ArianeGroup, with assembly spread across multiple European countries.
With 175 satellites already in orbit, Amazon aims to rapidly scale up its Leo constellation, while Ariane 6 continues to transition from institutional missions to high-profile commercial launches. The successful deployment of all 32 satellites after a mission lasting nearly two hours further reinforces Ariane 6 as a key launch vehicle for Europe’s future space strategy.
