The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has raised alarm over the illegal destruction and recycling of returnable packaging materials belonging to beverage companies, following recent police operations in Anambra State.
In February, joint raids by the Nigeria Police Force and beverage manufacturers targeted multiple illegal facilities in Onitsha and nearby areas, where suspects allegedly crushed company-owned glass bottles and shredded plastic crates for resale. The practice has been condemned as both unauthorised and economically damaging to businesses invested in sustainable packaging.
Brandspur Brand News reports that Segun Ajayi-Kadir, Director-General of MAN, described the activities as criminal sabotage, emphasising that the bottles and crates remain assets of beverage companies, integral to sustainability and operational efficiency. He commended the police and regulatory agencies for acting on intelligence-led investigations to dismantle illegal recycling operations.
Ajayi-Kadir highlighted that member companies reported significant financial losses due to diversion of packaging materials into informal recycling networks across the South-East. “These returnable packaging materials are designed for multiple reuse cycles. Destroying them undermines sustainability, cost-efficiency, and product quality,” he stated.
The MAN DG also warned offenders to cease such activities, stressing that the association would continue collaborating with law enforcement to ensure violators face legal consequences. He noted that beyond financial losses, the practice disrupts supply chains, increases operational costs, and poses environmental and safety risks.
Ajayi-Kadir further urged public vigilance, calling on citizens to report suspicious activities to the police or beverage company consumer care lines. He emphasised the need for continued government and community support to safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s circular packaging initiatives.
Authorities remain committed to monitoring compliance, with MAN reinforcing that protecting company-owned packaging materials is essential for both the economic and environmental sustainability of the nation’s beverage sector.
This crackdown serves as a critical reminder of the importance of lawful recycling practices and the shared responsibility of businesses, regulators, and the public to protect vital assets and support sustainable industry operations.
