LAGOS, Nigeria — The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has officially declared the “No Return, No Refund” trading practice illegal, warning that traders who refuse to replace or refund defective goods are violating Nigerian consumer protection laws.
The announcement came during a sensitisation campaign in Lagos markets aimed at educating traders and shoppers about their legal rights and obligations. The initiative forms part of a nationwide drive by the FCCPC to enforce fair market practices and strengthen consumer protection.
Brandspur Brand News reports that FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman, Babatunde Irukera, addressed traders and market leaders, emphasising that consumers who purchase faulty or substandard products are entitled to either a replacement or a refund. “The ‘No Return, No Refund’ policy is not recognised under Nigerian law. Traders must respect consumers’ rights,” he said, noting that violations would attract strict enforcement and penalties.
The outreach included the distribution of informational materials and direct engagement with shoppers and sellers, receiving mixed reactions. While some traders expressed concern over potential business impacts, many consumers welcomed the move. A shopper at Balogun Market said, “It’s about time we have protection. If a product is faulty, we should not be left to bear the loss.”
The FCCPC also responded to longstanding complaints from market patrons who had previously been denied refunds or exchanges. The Commission assured the public that affected consumers can now report incidents directly for prompt investigation and resolution.
With the government stepping up efforts to enforce consumer rights, traders are being urged to implement fair return policies and prioritise customer satisfaction. The move signals a shift from the “buyer beware” culture toward a more accountable market environment where “the customer is king.”
Officials confirmed that the campaign will continue across additional markets in Lagos and other states, aiming to instil consistent standards and strengthen compliance with consumer protection laws nationwide.
