The Federal Government has unveiled a new national initiative known as the Nigeria National Laureate Annual Prize Programme, designed to recognise and reward exceptional academic research carried out by students in tertiary institutions across the country.

The programme, approved as part of efforts to strengthen innovation and academic excellence, will provide financial incentives and national recognition to outstanding undergraduate, master’s and doctoral research projects that demonstrate originality, impact and academic rigour.

The initiative was announced by the Federal Ministry of Education in an official statement signed by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, outlining the government’s intention to reposition research as a key driver of national development.

Brandspur Brand News reports that the programme is structured to encourage a culture of competition and excellence among students, with cash rewards set at N5 million for undergraduate winners, N10 million for master’s degree recipients and N20 million for doctoral research awardees.

According to the Minister of Education, Maruf Olatunji Alausa, the prize scheme is aimed at elevating academic achievement by aligning research output with national recognition, while also providing meaningful financial rewards to incentivise high-quality scholarly work.

He explained that the initiative represents a strategic intervention to reshape Nigeria’s education system by prioritising research, innovation and academic distinction as central pillars of student development and institutional performance.

The programme will be overseen by a 10-member selection committee chaired by Professor Abubakar Sambo, which will handle submission reviews, evaluation processes and the selection of winners from across the country’s tertiary institutions.

The Federal Government disclosed that the first call for research submissions is expected to commence in May 2026, with the inaugural award ceremony scheduled to hold in November 2026 in Abuja.

Although the number of eventual winners has not yet been specified, the programme is expected to attract participation from students across Nigeria’s universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, fostering a competitive environment for research excellence.

The initiative is also expected to influence how students approach final-year projects and academic research, encouraging greater focus on problem-solving, innovation and contributions that address real-world challenges.

Beyond individual recognition, the government noted that the programme is expected to enhance the quality of research output across institutions, strengthen human capital development and contribute to broader economic growth through knowledge-driven innovation.

The Laureate Prize programme complements existing digital education initiatives such as the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank, which has already onboarded hundreds of institutions and catalogued thousands of student research works to improve accessibility and reduce academic fraud.

It also aligns with ongoing national efforts to boost research capacity, including investments in digital economy research clusters aimed at supporting evidence-based policymaking and advancing technological development in Nigeria
