Google Partners Slum2School And Broda Shaggi To Launch AI Folktale Colouring Book For Nigerian Children

Google has collaborated with Slum2School Africa and a group of Nigerian creatives to introduce a culturally themed colouring and folktale book designed to support learning among primary school pupils in underserved communities.

The initiative, titled “Stories from Our Home,” combines traditional storytelling with modern technology to produce educational materials aimed at addressing the shortage of learning resources in many Nigerian classrooms. The project will distribute 1,000 copies directly to children, alongside supplementary learning materials.

The book was developed using Google’s Gemini AI tool, which assisted in transforming African folklore into printable line art suitable for colouring. The approach blends artificial intelligence with creative storytelling to produce content that reflects local heritage while supporting early childhood education.

Brandspur Brand News reports that the project brought together prominent Nigerian entertainers and creators, including Broda Shaggi, Falz, Layi Wasabi and others, who contributed cultural narratives during an Imagination Workshop. Their contributions were adapted into visual and written content that captures Nigerian traditions, history and values.

The initiative was officially unveiled at the Slum2School Innovation Hub in Lekki, where children participated in reading sessions featuring guests such as Google West Africa Director Olumide Balogun, as well as media personalities Nancy Isime and Bisola Aiyeola. Stories shared during the event included narratives about the Great Rivers of Nigeria, the Walls of Benin, and Queen Moremi Ajasoro.

Organisers said the programme is designed not only to provide educational materials but also to reinforce cultural identity among children, helping them connect with their heritage through storytelling and creative expression.

Each participating child received a “Dream Pack” containing the folktale colouring book, crayons, notebooks, pencils and other educational items. The inclusion of these materials aims to encourage creativity while supporting foundational learning skills such as focus, imagination and motor development.

Slum2School Africa noted that the initiative aligns with its broader mission of improving access to education for children in underserved areas. The organisation emphasised that learning begins with access to stories, tools and environments that nurture curiosity and self-expression.

The collaboration highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence in educational content creation, particularly in emerging markets where access to quality learning resources remains limited. By integrating technology with local storytelling, the project seeks to expand educational opportunities while preserving cultural narratives for future generations.
