Everything you need to know about the new Google’s Android O (Developer preview)

Google’s upcoming mobile software Android O has been designed to extend battery life and let users perform multiple tasks at once, the developer preview reveals.

The internet giant says it is putting “a big priority on improving a user’s battery life and the device’s interactive performance” with Android O.

To do this, the internet giant is introducing new limits that prevent apps running in the background from sucking all of the charge out of a device’s battery. It has also created new multitasking features and greater controls over notifications.

Here’s everything you need to know about Android O:

Improved battery life

To enhance the battery life of Android devices, Google is blocking apps from carrying out certain tasks when they’re running in the background. The restrictions include an app reacting to “implicit broadcasts”, or changes on a device such as Wi-Fi turning on or a picture being taken. It will also limit some background services and location updates when an app isn’t in use.

Limited notifications

With most people overwhelmed with the number of notifications they receive on a daily basis, Google is introducing new ways to control the number you see and how they come through. Users will be able to manage each app individually with “fine-grained control”. For example, in news they will be able to select what areas they’re interested in hearing about.

Easy multitasking

Google has added a number of features to Android O to help users multitask. The first is “picture in picture” display which allows videos to keep playing in a smaller screen while users browse other sites, send a message or make a call. Google has also made it easier to use a second screen alongside their Android device with the ability to launch a program on a remote display.

Other highlights

The new software has a range of other upgrades that improve Wi-Fi connectivity, keyboard navigation and wireless sound. It also includes new colour support for app developers and the ability to animate and change the shape of icons. A list of all the features currently publicised can be found on the Android website.

What will it be called?

For the past few years Google has released its developer preview with a letter and then expanded this into a name related to a sweet product. For example, Android N became Nougat and L became Lollipop.

People have started to speculate what the O could stand for but there are few convincing answers. Suggestions have included Oreo, Oatmeal Cookie and Ox-tongue Pasty. The favourite appears to be Oreo, but Google has traditionally shied away from brand names for the software.

When can I download the software?

It is not clear when Android O will become available to the wider public, but Google has historically released more details at its annual developers’ conference in May.

“The usual caveats apply: it’s early days, there are more features coming, and there’s still plenty of stabilisation and performance work ahead of us,” said Dave Burke, vice president of engineering for Android. “Over the course of the next several months, we’ll be released updated developer previews, and we’ll be doing a deep dive on all things Android at Google I/O in May.”

Google unveils Android O, promising better battery life

Developer preview version of new operating system released showcasing a suite of improvements

Google has released the developer preview for the next version of its operating system (OS), Android O (which will eventually get a sweet-themed name to follow Lollipop, Marshmallow and Nougat). The new OS includes a suite of small improvements – and a few large ones – that will make life easier for Android users everywhere.

Related image

The most significant is a new approach to dealing with apps running in the background, which Google says should markedly improve the battery life of phones, tablets and other devices. Now, apps are automatically limited in what they can do when they’re running in the background, in three specific areas: background services, location updates and implicit broadcasts.

Those three areas are often at fault when it comes to battery-draining apps, since they can result in a moderately large power draw on an ongoing basis. In the future, developers will be limited in how much they can do in the background. Location, for instance, will only be updated a few times each hour, while background services – programmes which run continuously doing things like checking inboxes while the user is in another app – will now be closed automatically after a short period.

If the changes sound familiar, it might be because they’re similar to how iOS handles background applications. The two operating systems have been converging on this ground from opposite ends since their inception: Android once had no limits at all on what apps could do in the background, while Apple once banned every single background process that it didn’t create.

Elsewhere, the new OS has some more obvious user-facing updates. Most noticeably, a new notification system should come as welcome news to users who are used to getting a significant chunk of their daily information through app alerts.

Starting with O, Android developers can group their notifications into categories called “Channels”, allowing apps to offer more fine-grained control over how users receive their notifications. For instance, a news app might offer notifications for breaking news, and for replies to comments: now, the user can explicitly tell Android to let the former play a sound, vibrate, and show on the lockscreen, while quietly sliding the latter into the notification menu.

Smaller, but no less transformative, is the introduction of a “snooze” button to notifications. If you’re the sort who needs an empty inbox, but can’t deal with that one text quite yet, Android will now simply resend it a bit later.

The rest of the changes are a grab-bag, with some only mattering to developers, but a few which will be noticed by end-users:

  • New autofill APIs allow users to store personal data in specific apps, just like they do with password managers, and autofill them across the whole platform, in a similar way to how keyboards can be swapped out in current Android.
  • Picture-in-picture display is now available for phones and tablets, letting users watch video while using other apps.
  • New bluetooth audio codecs are supported, enabling higher audio fidelity when using headphones like Sony’s MDR-1000x (Google specifically thanks Sony for the amount of help it gave to developing this new version of Android).
  • Users who pair Android with a keyboard will find it’s easier to navigate around most apps using the arrow and tab keys.
  • And finally, developers can now make adaptive icons, which will always match the icon style of the particular flavour of Android, whatever type of rounded rectangle it uses.

Philip Morris International Inc. (PMI) (NYSE/Euronext Paris: PM) today announced an investment of approximately €300 million to convert the cigarette factory of Papastratos, PMI’s affiliate in Greece, into a manufacturing plant for the tobacco sticks to be used with its smoke-free product IQOS. These tobacco sticks are currently commercialized as Heets or HeatSticks.

“Our ambition is that one day potentially less harmful, smoke-free products replace cigarettes to the benefit of smokers, public health, and society at large.” Tweet this

Since the equipment necessary to manufacture tobacco sticks for IQOS is larger than that required for cigarette manufacturing, the current facility area will be expanded. Once fully operational, the plant will have an annual capacity of around 20 billion tobacco sticks. The investment will create 400 new jobs at Papastratos, which already employs approximately 800 people. Construction on the site will commence immediately, with production scheduled to begin in January 2018.

This investment is further evidence of our progress towards a smoke-free future. We are encouraged by the 1.4 million smokers who have already switched to IQOS around the world, and we expect this momentum to continue. This facility will help enable us to meet growing demand from adult smokers,” stated Frederic de Wilde, PMI’s Regional President for the European Union. He added, “Our ambition is that one day potentially less harmful, smoke-free products replace cigarettes to the benefit of smokers, public health, and society at large.

The Papastratos plant in Aspropyrgos (Greece) will be PMI’s third facility fully dedicated to the manufacture of smoke-free products. In October 2016, PMI announced completion of its first facility for tobacco sticks manufacturing in Crespellano (Bologna, Italy) in addition to a pre-existing small scale Industrial Development Center in Neuchatel (Switzerland).

IQOS is one of four smoke-free product types from PMI to address adult smoker demand for potentially less harmful alternatives to cigarettes. It is a heated tobacco product launched in late 2014 in two city test markets and is expected to be available in key cities in over 30 markets in 2017. Since 2008, PMI has hired more than 400 scientists and experts and invested over USD 3 billion in research, product development, and scientific substantiation. Results of scientific research to assess the reduced-risk potential of IQOS are very promising, and the company openly shares its scientific methodologies and findings for independent third-party review and verification.

Philip Morris International Inc.

Philip Morris International Inc. (PMI) is the world’s leading international tobacco company, with six of the world’s top 15 international brands and products sold in more than 180 markets. In addition to the manufacture and sale of cigarettes, including Marlboro, the number one global cigarette brand, and other tobacco products, PMI is engaged in the development and commercialization of Reduced-Risk Products (RRPs). RRPs is the term PMI uses to refer to products that present, are likely to present, or have the potential to present less risk of harm to smokers who switch to these products versus continued smoking. Through multidisciplinary capabilities in product development, state-of-the-art facilities, and industry-leading scientific substantiation, PMI aims to provide an RRP portfolio that meets a broad spectrum of adult smoker preferences and rigorous regulatory requirements. GOtv Boxing Night 11: Organisers promise adequate security

Flykite Productions, organisers of GOtv Boxing Night, have promised adequate security in and around the Indoor Sports Hall of the Liberty Stadium, Ibadan, venue of the 11th edition of the event holding on 26 March.

Speaking in Lagos yesterday, Mr. Jenkins Alumona, Managing Director of Flykite Productions, said arrangements have been concluded to ensure adequate protection of fans coming to the event.

“There is nothing to fear. We have always ensured that fans and their properties are safe in around the venue. Since 2014, when the event began, we have not had a single breach. One of our partners is the leading private security firm in the country. The firm has a lot of experience in handling big events of this nature. We seize this opportunity to tell fans that they will watch top class boxing in a safe and secure environment,” said Alumona.
Alumona added that GOtv Boxing Night is being held outside Lagos because there is a need for other states to enjoy what Lagosians have been enjoying since the event began.

“Ibadan, as you know, has a long association with boxing and it is the base of the legend, Dele Jonathan. Part of the history was created by the late Chief Francis Aiyegbeni, who was a strong supporter and promoter of the sport. Ibadan’s association with boxing sure must count for something,” explained Alumona.
