SoftBank Group Corp. decided to invest $500 million in OpenAI after learning that Apple had withdrawn its plans to invest in the AI startup. SoftBank’s stock has reportedly increased after the announcement, as the company plans to invest $500 million in OpenAI through its Vision Fund.

OpenAI is expected to be valued at $150 billion, and its fundraising goal is $6.5 billion from different investors, BrandSpur digital news platform reports. According to earlier rumours, Thrive Capital—one of OpenAI’s main partners—is anticipated to spearhead the financing.

Regarding the details of the deal, neither OpenAI nor SoftBank have released any formal announcements, and neither company has offered a word on the current talks. SoftBank is making its first investment in the AI startup headed by Sam Altman with this possible cash.

OpenAI, which has been in talks to reform its organisational framework, is sensitive to the move. With these reorganisation efforts, OpenAI hopes to shift away from its current hybrid non-profit form and towards a more conventional for-profit organisation.

This would eliminate current profit caps and draw in additional funding. It has been claimed that Apple, which was originally anticipated to take part in this fundraising round, has decided not to participate. Investor interest has not decreased despite this decision, as OpenAI continues to garner notable support from other significant companies in the tech sector.

The AI competition has greater stakes than ever since SoftBank may now enter the picture. SoftBank gains a larger presence in the AI industry and OpenAI’s position in the market is reinforced by the investment.
