Nigeria’s GDP Rises By 2.28% On The Back Of Oil & Gas, Telecoms In Q3 2019

Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 2.28% (year-on-year), in real terms, in the third quarter of 2019. Compared to the third quarter of 2018 which recorded a growth of 1.81%, the real GDP growth rate observed in the third quarter of 2019 indicates an increase of 0.47% points. Relative to the second quarter of 2019, which recorded a growth rate of 2.12%, Q3 2019 represents an increase of 0.17% points.* On a quarter on quarter basis, however, real GDP grew by 9.23%. The growth rate in Q3 2019 represents the second-highest quarterly rate recorded since 2016.

In the quarter under review, aggregate GDP stood at N37,806,924.41 million in nominal terms. This performance is higher compared to the aggregate of N33,368,049.14 million recorded in the third quarter of 2018, representing a year on year nominal growth rate of 13.30%. The growth rate is, however, lower relative to rates recorded in the third quarter of 2018 by –0.28% points and the rates recorded in the preceding quarter by –0.71% points. For better clarity, the Nigerian economy has been classified broadly into the oil and non-oil sectors.

The Oil Sector

In Q3 2019, Nigeria recorded average daily oil production of 2.04 million barrels per day (mbpd), its highest in more than three years. This output was 0.1mbpd higher than the daily average production of 1.94mbpd recorded in the same quarter of 2018 and 0.02mbpd higher than the revised oil production levels in Q2 2019 of 2.02mbpd.

The real growth of the oil sector was 6.49% (year-on-year) in Q3 2019 indicating an increase of 9.40% points relative to rate recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2018. The rate was lower by –0.68% points when compared to Q2 2019 which was 7.17%.* Quarter-on-Quarter, the oil sector recorded a growth rate of 18.88% in Q3 2019. The sector contributed 9.77% to total real GDP in Q3 2019, up from figures recorded in the corresponding period of 2018 as well as the preceding quarter, when it accounted for 9.38% and 8.98% respectively.

The Non-Oil Sector

The non-oil sector grew by 1.85% in real terms during the reference quarter. This is –0.48% points lower when compared to the rate recorded in the same quarter of 2018 but 0.20% points higher than the second quarter of 2019. During the quarter, the sector was driven mainly by the Information and Communication sector. Other drivers were Agriculture, Mining and Quarrying, Transportation and Storage, and Manufacturing. In real terms, the Non-Oil sector contributed 90.23% to the nation’s GDP, slightly lower than the share recorded in the third quarter of 2018 (90.62%), and in the second quarter of 2019 (91.02%).

Partnership For The Sound Of The Future: Hans Zimmer Is Now Official Composer And Curator For BMW IconicSounds Electric

In June 2019 at the #NEXT Gen in Munich, Hans Zimmer and BMW Sound Designer Renzo Vitale presented their jointly developed e-sound for the BMW Vision M NEXT. In Santa Monica Hans Zimmer has now officially announced his partnership with the BMW Group to further develop BMW IconicSounds Electric. Hans Zimmer: “We have the unique opportunity to turn electric driving in a BMW into a magnificent experience with outstanding sonority. I am really looking forward to the challenge of shaping the sound for future electric BMW’s. Developing the sounds for the BMW Vision M NEXT together with Renzo Vitale was already an inspiring, new experience for me.”

Jointly developed sound to enter series vehicles already in 2020

Prior to the Los Angeles Auto Show, Hans Zimmer and BMW Sound Designer Renzo Vitale gave exclusive insights into their previous collaboration at Hans Zimmer’s studio in Santa Monica. In this exact studio, where Hans Zimmer usually composes his famous scores for Hollywood movies, the two jointly developed the e-sound of the BMW Vision M NEXT. Furthermore, Zimmer and Vitale revealed their most recent co-creation: The sound signalling readiness for driving in purely electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles of the BMW brand. The sound will enter series vehicles already in 2020. Renzo Vitale: “Sound Design gives us the opportunity to evoke positive emotions in our vehicles. This new start-sound triggers joyful anticipation of the electric drive, when the customer enters his vehicle and presses the Start/Stop button.”

BMW IconicSounds Electric

The silence of driving electrically is often cited as a major advantage of electric mobility. However, as the range of electrified models increases, a gap in the emotionality of the driving experience arises for the driver. Under the brand name “BMW IconicSounds Electric” a visionary sound offer will be created for future electrified vehicles from BMW. Stefan Ponikva, Vice President BMW Brand Experience: “Over the years, the sound of our vehicles has enthused and accompanied millions of people. We are very excited about the exceptional chance of creating the sounds for BMW’s electric mobility together with Hans Zimmer. Thereby we can charge future emotions of our customers worldwide anew and redefine sheer driving pleasure.”

As composer and curator of BMW IconicSounds Electric Hans Zimmer will contribute his expertise to various projects for sound creation for electrified BMW vehicles worldwide. The variety of projects may include sounds for vision vehicles and concepts, series vehicles, the composition of sound signs, but also sound creation for communicative occasions focusing on the acoustic-emotional character of electric mobility.

BMW Group has been developing the sound for electric mobility for around ten years now

In 2009, with the introduction of the MINI E test fleet, acoustic engineers from the BMW Group were already working on artificially generated sound, which was intended to contribute to the better perceptibility of vehicles with barely audible drivetrains. Since the launch of the BMW i3, customers have therefore been able to choose acoustic pedestrian protection as optional equipment.

The sound of the acoustic pedestrian protection has since been further developed in line with new legislative requirements and is now gradually being rolled out as standard in all plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles from BMW (requirements for acoustic pedestrian protection as well as operating times vary worldwide). The aim of the development was to fulfil the important warning function without disturbing pedestrians. At the same time, the customer should continue to enjoy a high level of acoustic comfort in the vehicle.

Technology Companies Report Hiring Slowdown in Asia Pacific

0
  • In
Singapore, the percentage of technology companies planning for increased
    headcount remains steady at 6.0%.
  • Salary increase budgets remain steady in Singapore at 4.0% but are
forecasted to be higher in India, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines and South
    Korea.

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – 21 November 2019 – Workforce trends data at technology
companies across Asia-Pacific reflect a cautious hiring environment in the
third quarter of 2019 compared to the prior quarter, according to the Radford
Global Technology Survey. Radford is part of the Rewards Solutions practice at Aon
plc (NYSE: AON), a leading global professional services firm providing a
broad range of risk, retirement, and health solutions.

In many countries
throughout the region aggressive hiring declined, most notably in India, where
the demand for technology talent was robust in previous quarters. Despite the
dip in hiring, India remains the top market for technology company growth with
12.1% of companies planning aggressive hiring. In Singapore, the percentage of
technology companies planning for increased headcount remained steady at 6.0%.
On the low end is Taiwan with only 1.9% of companies ramping up hiring. China
is experiencing a slight rebound in hiring after last quarter’s slowdown amid
an ongoing trade war with the U.S.

As technology
companies across Asia-Pacific pull back on hiring, we find that voluntary
turnover has decreased in all markets except for India. Voluntary turnover
dropped in Singapore from 14.7% to 12.9%. Average voluntary turnover among technology companies in Asia-Pacific is
12.2%; across the globe, it’s 13.3%.

Trend lines often
converge between turnover and hiring. When the technology sector is in a slower
state of growth, employees are less likely to switch jobs. At the same time,
the decrease in turnover can also be attributed to businesses improving
retention through more compelling rewards programmes, such as adding equity
eligibility further down the organisation or increasing short- or long-term
incentive targets for critical job roles and/or high-performing employees.

As companies put the brakes on aggressive hiring, this is an
opportunity for HR leaders to examine their rewards programmes and ensure they
resonate with current employees to keep top talent engaged, says Alexander Krasavin, Partner and Head of Technology and Life
Sciences for the Asia, Pacific and Middle East regions, in the Rewards
Solutions practice at Aon. “The annual merit increase is an
important component of a total rewards package, but many employees view this as
an entitlement,” Krasavin says. “To make your merit budget go further, consider
differentiating merit increases even more and leveraging long-term incentives
to reward performance.”
